Mendenhall Enhanced Stimulus Program
California is in a Budget State of Emergency. Our education budgets have been cut by $20 BILLION over the last three years and another $4 billion in reductions is looming. Class sizes are growing; music, art and sports programs are being eliminated; computer lab and library hours are reduced; and schools are shutting down because of State budget cuts. For more information visit Tom Torlakson’s site at http://www.cde.ca.gov/nr/el/le/yr11ltr0426.asp.
- LVJUSD has $34.5M over the last 3 years and may be facing another $14.6M shortfall.
-
LVJUSD receives around $1,000 less per student per year of State funding than other districts due to old funding rules.
-
Over the past four years, LVJUSD has had to reduce its workforce by 10%.
-
With community support, the Parcel Tax has helped us thus far. However, the new cuts could be catastrophic to our budget.
With continued cuts, the school will be looking to PTSA to help make up for the shortfall in items that directly impact your child. In 2010/11 through you generous support the PTSA:
-
Provided Teacher and Department Grants (Over $14,000). These funds were used to purchase much needed equipment, supplies, and supplemental learning materials to enhance teaching efforts.
-
Funded Anti Bullying programs, technology upgrades that impacted nearly every classroom and the purchase of the web based AR program with greater variety for students and enhanced tools for teachers (Over $43,000).
-
Continued to sponsor the following programs: Academic Olympics, College Night, Library, MathCounts®, Mendenhall Matters, Principals Honor Roll Celebrations, 8th grade promotion activities, and campus improvements.
Unfortunately this year we need to dig even deeper. Based on the revised budget for next year Mendenhall can no longer pay to subsidize Library hours and the Time Out Room. This represents a need of $35,000 more than our current budget.
-
The Library is a major resource for our children. The funds we raise will allow it to be open every day for our students to read, find resources, take AR tests and even have access to computers and printers that they may not be able to access at home.
-
The Time Out Room is not simply a place to send children who misbehave. It is a benefit to all students at Mendenhall. If a student is causing a disruption in class it may consume the teacher’s focus. Sending them to the Time Out Room allows them to get the attention they need while allowing the rest of our students to take full advantage of their class time.
Please help us to keep these valuable resources available to the students and staff at Mendenhall. A donation for each student of $1.00 a Day would meet our budget needs but any donation large or small will help make a difference.
