2011 Colorado MetLife Educator Training
Thank you for you interest in the 2011 Colorado Met Life Educator Training. This training was made possible from funding through National 4-H Council and the Met Life Foundation. Colorado State University Extension /4-H, Colorado Out-of-School Time (COST) Network, the Colorado Alliance for Quality School Age Providers (CAQSAP), RAFT and 21st Century Community Learning Centers, a part of the Colorado Department of Education, are providing a professional development training that will focus on the needs of educators in Colorado in hopes that the training can be a resource in your classroom or organization. Participants will receive 6.5 hours of continuing education for state licensed school-age providers. CSU Extension/ 4-H will focus on the new National Afterschool curriculum, Food, Culture, and Reading and how to incorporate more Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) concepts into OST and classroom programs. Food, Culture and Reading is a nutrition education curriculum that uses literature to learn about food, healthy living, and different cultures. Through experiential activities, youth will be able to recognize a variety of healthful foods within food groups, taste new foods from other cultures, explore the similarities of food, and develop an understanding and appreciation of cultures that are different than their own. The book is divided into six units: United States and Food Groups, Mexico and Grains, Russia and Vegetables, Kenya and Fruits, Greece and Milk, Japan and Meat and Beans. Each unit includes six activities based on a single culture, a featured book, and nutritional information for youth. Each unit will be accompanied by a hands-on STEM activity that also can be utilized by educators. Additional resources on STEM, civic engagement, and the resources of partners from the Colorado Out of School Time Network will be available throughout the training. Educators will receive a copy of the Food, Culture, and Reading curriculum in the training as well as various activity sheets for the STEM activities. Kits will be available for check out following the training at county Extension offices coordinated with the location of the training.
Trainings will be from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
