A moratorium on death penalty was recently adopted in the UN. China has established a rule of presenting to a supreme court the death penalty cases. Further steps in the right direction would be for China to: - Reduce the number of capital offences, with substantial reforms to non-violent cases; - Regularly publish official statistics on the total number of death sentences; - Provide families and lawyers of those sentenced to death with access to administrative and procedural information on their case. These measures should be put in place before the opening of the Olympic Games, so that the legacy of the Beijing Games would be of an improvement in Human Rights’ issues.
