  • MEDICAL CONDITIONS NECESSITATING CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE USE:

  • Your provider has prescribed a controlled substance or opioid medication to treat your pain. Prescription opioid medications can be used to help relieve moderate-to-severe pain and are often prescribed following a surgery or injury, or for certain health conditions. These medications can be an important part of treatment but also can pose serious risks. It is important to work with your health care provider to make sure you are getting the most effective and safest care

  • POTENTIAL RISKS AND SIDE-EFFECTS OF CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE USE;

  • These medications carry serious risks of addiction and overdose, especially with prolonged use.The use of prescription opioids can cause a number of side effects as well, even when taken as directed:

    Toleranceyou might need to take more of a medication for the same pain relief.

    hysical dependencesymptoms of withdrawal when medication is stopped.

    Constipationfollow guidelines provided and report symptom if no bowel movement for 3 days despite interventions.

    Nausea and vomitingfollow guidelines provided and report uncontrolled symptoms.

    Sleepiness and dizzinesscaution with use ofdriving or operating large machinery

    Low levels of testosterone that can result in lower energy, sex drive and strength

    Risks are greater with: history of drug misuse, substance use disorder, or overdose; mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression; sleep apnea; older age (65 years or older); and pregnancy. Avoid alcohol consumption while taking controlled substances/opioids.Also, unless your health care provider specifically advises, medications to avoid include:muscle relaxants (e.g. Flexeril); hypnotics (e.g. Lunesta or Ambien); Benzodiazepines (e.g. Valium or Xanax) or other prescription opioids.Taking more controlled substances and opioids than prescribed, or combining multiple substances as described abovecan lead to respiratory depression and can be fatal (cause death

  • ALTERNATIVE THERAPY OPTIONS:

  • Talk with your health care provider about ways to manage your pain that don't involve prescription opioids. Some of these options may actually work better and have fewer risks and side effects. These options may include: non-opioid medications such as pain relievers (Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen and Naproxen) and some anti-depressives or anti-seizure medications; light exercise/physical therapy; complementary therapies (e.g. biofeedback, massage, medications, counseling

  • Never take controlled substances/opioids in greater amounts or more often than prescribed
