Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) Vaccine Update:

If you were exposed to measles, you should get the MMR vaccine within 3 days if you:

    • Haven't had all your measles shots or had measles before
    • Were born after 1957
    • Are older than 6 months old
    • Are not pregnant
    • Do not have a weakened immune system

If you were born after 1957 and haven't had two MMR vaccine doses or measles, getting vaccinated can help protect you, especially if you:

    • Are continuing your education after high school (like in college or trade school).
    • Work or volunteer in any healthcare setting.
    • Plan to travel outside the country, including on cruises.
    • Are a woman who could become pregnant (and are not currently pregnant).

    MMR Vaccine Recommendations for Children

Age < 1 year old 1-6 years old 7-19 years old
    Guidelines

Under routine circumstances, MMR is not recommended for children under 12 months of age. MMR can be given to children as young as six months old if they have been exposed if they are in an outbreak setting or if they are traveling to a measles-endemic area. This is in addition to the regular two measles shots they'll get starting at one year old.

Your child should get their first measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) shot between 12 and 15 months old. The second MMR shot is usually given between 4 and 6 years old. If your child needs both shots to catch up, there should be at least 4 weeks between them. To protect your child from measles, mumps, and rubella, they need two doses of the MMR vaccine. If your child is missing any doses, they need them two shots, spaced at least four weeks (28 days) apart.

    For everyone:

    • One dose of measles vaccine (MMR) is 93% effective against measles.
    • Two doses is 97% effective against measles.
    • There are 2 types of MMR vaccines: MMR II and Priorix. Both work equally well and are interchangeable.
