ENGLISH PLACEMENT ASSESSMENT OPTION: You will be asked a series of questions related to reading and writing. Read the questions carefully. Your score will be given at the end of the assessment and will be used to recommend the course that best fits your English skills.
Step 1: Reading Skills Assessment
Read the passage below and then answer question 1:
With varying success, many women around the world today struggle for equal rights. Historically, women have achieved greater equality with men during periods of social adversity. The following factors initiated the greatest number of improvements for women: violent revolution, world war, and the rigors of pioneering in an undeveloped land. In all three cases, the essential element that improved the status of women was a shortage of men, which required women to perform many of society’s vital tasks.

Although it was first produced in London in 1982, Caryl Churchill’s classic play, Top Girls, is enjoying a revival on Broadway in 2008. The first production satirizes the rampant greed of the Thatcher years, but the message of women’s distinctive struggles still holds true. The memorable and innovative first act took place in a restaurant on a Saturday night as Marlene, the main character, celebrates her promotion to managing director of the Top Girls Employment Agency. She is joined by five unusual women from history. The first character, Isabella Bird, is an actual nineteenth-century Scottish adventurer. In the play, she claimed to have avoided marriage and family willingly in order to enjoy her world travels. Lady Nijo, the second character, was based on a thirteenth-century Japanese concubine of the emperor. She had lost all of her four children over the course of the play and later becomes a Buddhist nun. The third woman is fictional: Dull Gret, a character in a sixteenth-century painting by Brueghel. She is supposedly a Dutch peasant woman who turned warrior against Spain when her children had been killed. The fourth character, Pope Joan, was based on a legendary figure who somehow managed to deceive the Catholic clergy and rise to the position of pope. She was undone when she gives birth to a child during a ceremonial parade. Last is another fictional character, Patient Griselda, from "The Clerk’s Tale" in Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. This peasant woman married a marquis and demonstrates her unquestioning obedience by giving up her two children at their births. All of these women tell their stories of suffering and sacrifice but also reveal their petty vanities and selfishness.

ENG 101A requires practice in writing, rhetoric, and reasoning, with emphasis on using the writing process to compose college-level essays. This course integrates foundational traing in essay development, grammar and writing mechanics into the ENG 101 curriculum.
ENG 098 integrates reading/critical thinking/writing approach to basic skills needed for success in college. Extensive writing practice with emphasis on the writing process, writing strategies and essay development.
ENG 095 focuses on principles of basic reading and writing skills through, vocabulary development, reading strategies, reading comprehension, recognizing reading and writing structures, grammar and punctuation, sentence structure, and concepts of paragraph and essay development.

MATH PLACEMENT BASED ON PREREQUISITE
Math Course Descriptions:
MAT 230 covers applications and methods of integration, Taylor polynomials and series, differential equations, multivariable functions and vectors.
MAT 220 covers limits, continuity, differential, and integral operations on algebraic and trigonometric functions and applications.
MAT 211 covers integral and differential calculus, including multidimensional, with business and social science applications.
MAT 187 covers college level algebra and trigonometric topics to prepare for calculus. Functions, equations, and inequalities, trigonometry, and fundamental algebra theorems will be studied.
MAT 181 covers mathematical foundations of the elementary school mathematics curriculum including measurement, geometry, probability, and statistics. Emphasizes the use of models and manipulatives to increase understanding of the mathematical concepts.
MAT 180 covers mathematical foundations of elementary school mathematics curriculum, including problem solving, principles of whole numbers, integers, rational numbers, ratios, proportions and percentages. Emphasizes the use of models and manipulatives to increase understanding of the mathematical concepts.
MAT 172 covers various analytical methods used in business and social sciences, including algebra review, functions and modeling, systems of linear equations, matrices, linear programming, mathematics of finance, probability, and combinations.
MAT 160/BUS 232/PSY 230 involves statistical tools and techniques used in applications. Includes collection of data, graphical and descriptive statistics, probability and probability distributions, point and interval estimates of population parameters, hypothesis testing, and correlation and regression.
MAT 151 covers college level algebra, including equations, functions, matrices, inequalities, sequences and series, and fundamental algebra theorems will be studied.
MAT 142 will examine finance, growth, probability, statistics, and common applications encountered in society.
MAT 140 will examine finance, growth, probability, statistics, and common applications encountered in society. Review material will be taught just in time for when it is needed.
MAT 097 covers basic algebraic concepts, including rational expressions, functions and their graphs, radicals, quadratics, and logarithms/exponentials
MAT 091 covers basic algebraic concepts including operations with signed numbers, exponents and radicals, linear equations and inequalities, polynomials, and graphing.
MAT 088 covers arithmetic concepts with integers, fractions, and decimals, including signed numbers. Solving linear equations and evaluating algebraic expressions.
