Mustang Cross Country competes in local, state, and regional meets during the Fall, in accordance with the established rules & regulations of the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA). Practices are immediately after school weekdays with an occasional Saturday practice.
Most meets are on Saturday mornings, but some are conducted on weekday afternoons (usually Tuesdays or Thursdays). Metro and Sectional Championships take place on weekdays, and the State Championship is usually the second Saturday in November at the historic Jesse Owens Course in the Danville, AL area. All championship meets (Metro, Sectional, & State) have qualification requirements.
Each meet takes approximately 1 1/2-2 hours from the start of the first race to the conclusion of the awards ceremony for that meet (not counting travel time). The JV distance in Cross Country is 3200m (close to 2 miles), while Varsity runners compete in the 5000m (5K or 3.1 miles). Courses vary from hilly to flat, on grass, gravel, dirt, and pavement, and some courses feature water and mud hazards. As often is said by Cross Country athletes, “our sport is your sport’s punishment” the sport demands that its athletes possess speed, physical endurance, mental toughness, and determination.
