To receive SIPA's Administrator of the Year Award, a candidate must meet the following criteria:
- The administrator must provide support to more than one media staff.
- The administrator must nurture the principals of scholastic journalism.
- The administrator must provide support, including resources to meet the program's needs.
- The administrator must recognize and allow for the time demands placed upon the adviser for media.
- The administrator must support the educational growth of the students by encouraging them to attend workshops, conferences and conventions.
- The administrator must support the academic standards of the courses and the enrollment of students in media programs.
- The administrator must support publications' participation in the memberships and critiques of state, regional and national organizations.
- At least one media staff at the administrator's school must be an active member of SIPA.
- SIPA advisers may nominate the administrators at their schools.
