Policy Pulse 2:
An Online Platform to Explore UN Voting Data
UN Partner: UN Digital Library (New York & Vienna)
Duration: Oct./Nov. 2026 to July/Aug. 2027
Number of project positions: 2 open (4 already filled)
This project continues a collaboration between the UN Student Team at ETH and the UN Digital Library in New York & Vienna. Aim of our collaboration is to develop an online platform that allows diplomats, citizens, and researchers around the world to explore UN voting data in an accessible manner.
In a first project cycle, ETH students have already built an initial prototype that focuses on voting data from the UN General Assembly (GA). The current app allows users to explore countries’ voting behaviour in the GA across geographic regions, subjects, and time. The next cycle of "Policy Pulse" will aim to extend the existing prototype by (1) incorporating voting data from the UN Security Council and Human Rights Council and by (2) improving the frontend and overall user workflow.
Project volunteers will have real creative freedom in how they approach these tasks. Among others, students are encouraged to design new application features that highlight patterns in voting data across different UN bodies, and to improve the UI especially for users with limited data literacy. Strong UI/UX instincts are especially valuable here: much of the work involves figuring out how to present the UN's rich voting data in a way that is intuitive, both for people who already work with UN data professionally, and for first-time users.
