  • F-1 Visa Student Application Information

    Now Accepting Applications for Fall 2023!
    The Fall 2023 semester will start on Monday, August 28, 2023

    Thank you for your interest in applying to San Jose City College as an F-1 visa - International Student.

    In addition to completing this online application, all prospective F-1 international students must submit the following required documents:

    1. Official Transcripts: Detailed English translations of ALL secondary and post-secondary schools attended.
      • Students under the age of 18 must show proof of high school graduation or the equivalent by the start of the semester applying.
      • Unofficial copies may be submitted for initial admissions review. Official copies will be required upon enrollment.

    2. Proof of English Language Proficiency - As demonstrated by ONE of the following:
      • Examination: Scores must be sent directly by the testing agency
        • TOEFL(link) School Code: 4686 Dept Code: 00
          • Minimum Score: 500 paper-based; 61 iBT
        • IELTS(link) Academic Module
          • Minimum Band Score: 5.5
        • STEP-EIKEN(link)
          • Minimum Score: Step 2A
        • PTE(link) Academic Test
          • Minimum Score: 42
        • Duolingo(link)
          • Minimum Overall Score: 90
      • Completion of Prerequisite Course for college-level English at a U.S. institution (As clearly shown on transcript).
      • Participation in Partner English Language Program (link)
        • You must contact the Language school of your choice and apply directly to their program.
    3. Original Bank Certification Letter - indicating required funds in USD dated within six months of the start of the semester applying.
      • For the 2022-23 Academic year the minimum required is $23,300 USD
      • Fall semester applicants' bank documents should be dated from February or later.
      • Spring semester applicants' bank documents should be dated from June or later.

    4. Financial Certification Form - Signed by applicant and guarantor(s) if applicable.
      • The applicant (student) must complete and sign Sections 1, 2, and 3.
      • If the applicant will be under 18 on the first day of the semester the applicant's parent must complete Section 4.
      • If the applicant has a Sponsor/Guarantor, the person must complete and sign Section 5.

    5. Passport Biographical Page or Passport size picture

    F-1 Transfer students from other U.S. institutions must also submit the following:

    • Passport biographical information page
    • I-94
    • Copy of Current active I-20
    • Copy of Current visa
    • Statement of Purpose

    Applications from transfer students with F-1 visas  may be accepted after the deadline on a case-by-case basis.

  • The Spring Semester application (late January start) deadline is now November 30th

    The Fall Semester application (late August start) deadline is July 15th.

    Transfer applications may reviewed on a case by case basis after the deadline. All other applications submitted after the deadline will be automatically moved to the following semester.

  • Change of Status application must be submitted at least 6 months prior to the start of the semester you wish to attend, no exceptions will be made. If you apply out of this timeframe your applications will be automatically moved to the following semester.

    If you are currently in the U.S. and thinking about applying for a Change of Status to the F-1 visa we highly recommend you get legal advice from an immigration attorney to review your situation. If possilbe, it is usually more efficient to apply for the F-1 visa from your home country.

    Please note: If you apply for a Change of Status you will not be able to work, study, or leave the U.S. while your case in pending and we have heard this may take one year or longer.

  • 3. English Proficiency Requirement

    San Jose City College requires F-1 international students to be proficient in English for full admission. If you do not currently meet the English proficiency requirement, you may gain admission for a future semester by attending a partner English language school. If you plan to attend a language school, you may receive a conditional letter of admission to SJCC (please select option D below).

  • 6. Admissions Documents Delivery

  • If admitted to San José City College, an admission packet will be provided including immigration form I-20, if applicable.

    Current SEVIS regulations allow immigration documents including I-20s to be signed electronically and sent via email directly to applicants.

    If accepted, please apply for your F-1 visa as soon as possible.

  • 8. Financial Certification & Bank Document

  • The U.S. Department of Homeland Security requires international students to provide documentation of financial support before a form I-20 can be issued by San José City College. Documentation of financial support includes 2 items:

    1) Complete and Signed Financial Certification Form (attached below)
    2) An original bank certification letter/statement showing the required funds available in liquid assets (cannot be from any fixed source such as stocks, bonds, or retirement accounts) listed in US dollars.

    Both items must be dated within six months of the start of the semester you are applying for.

    For the 2022-2023 academic year*, the minimum required amount is $23,300 USD.
