Why tax is added when it's exempted?

    Hi,

I am having some extreme difficulty in creating product sales with tax exemptions. I have already spoken with PayPal as this is who we integrated our forms with.

For a vendor and sponsorship form, we have tiers of different payments based on people registering and everything should be tax exempt since it is essentially a donation to our organization. I have made sure that all options listed are check marked and that the tax exempt is in place. However, when going over to PayPal and checking out, all of these items have tax added to it. Our PayPal representative believes this has something to do with the syncing. Can you advise?

If we cannot use product sales, what is the best way, on your form to offer different levels of payments without having tax added to it?

    Thank you!

    Hello,

I tested your form and when I was redirected to PayPal I got the total price without Tax:

Now, I'm not sure if later on tax is added? If that's the case could you please share the screenshot/

Here is how to do that:

    1) Go to this link: https://www.jotform.com/answers/1085472

    2) Click this icon:

    Thank you!

    Hi Nik,

Yes, that is correct but when you put in your payment information the tax then calculates.

    Hello Brandy,

Thank you for getting back to us. Could you please share with us the screenshot from PayPal with any of your products with the tax included?

So we can investigate this issue further.

    Thank you!

    Hi,

Please see the screen shot below. We are having the same issues with tax on our vendor form as well. Essentially any form that we are trying to sell a product on we cannot get to incorporate with the tax exempt option.

    Thanks!

I'm still unable to replicate this problem. I tested a clone of your form and added one tax to one of the products:

    Here is without tax:

And here is with the tax:

And here is the test I run on your form:

Now the only thing I can think of is that the tax is added automatically on PayPal based on the PayPal account, since, as you can see I wasn't logged in because my PayPal account is not accepted for your products.

So maybe that is what is happening. I tested several times and Products were always without tax.

Could you please check if that's the case?

    We'll wait for your response.

    Thank you!

I'm not quite sure I understand. When I go to check out and when the other two people have gone to check out. They are not logging into a PayPal account. They are paying as a guest. The shopping cart drop down does not show tax, until a payment has been entered. So the last screen shot that you are showing me is correct until you add in your payment information at which point tax in incurred.

If jotform doesn't have control over making items tax exempt, then why is it an option? What is the other option for needing to list multiple donations on one form without tax for our supporters to choose from?

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear. What I'm trying to say is that this is what I see when I test your form:

Why tax is added when its exempted? Image 1 Screenshot 20

Bottom line is that I'm not able to replicate the problem you're experiencing. So the tax exempt from the form is working fine (I mean the tax that is added to the product). I tried to enable the tax and that worked fine as well.

Do you know, by any chance, what is that tax that is added? I mean, in your form there is no tax that is defined, no percentage. But still, you see it when you reach the checkout.

Bottom line, maybe there is tax set up in your PayPal merchant account.

You can check this article from PayPal: https://www.paypal-community.com/t5/Merchant-services-Archive/PayPal-adds-sales-tax-to-ALL-purchases-out-of-state-nationwide/td-p/345722

Let us know how it worked.

    Thank you!
