I believe the reason I am not able to take payments is the account is unverified. I thought I did everything correctly when setting up. Why would I be getting this message?

I checked your PayPal field settings and everything looks to be correct. Under where you enter you API username/password and such, there is a button to verify the integration:
Click that to ensure your settings are correct. Once verified, you should be able to receive payments. Since you are using a PayPal Pro field, make sure you have a PayPal Pro or Business account.
