Configurable List: how to restrict the number of characters entered into a text area

My next question is how do I restrict the number of characters entered into a text area as you don't get the same options as you do normally on a textarea field where the number counter changes to red!

It is not possible to restrict the number of characters entered in the Text Area field of the Configurable List widget.
