How many total characters can I type in a short text entry field?

Asked by adea on June 05, 2017 at 12:46 PM

I have set my short text entry to a width of 20.  However, my team has asked me how much can a person type in the field.  I know I can change the field to a long text entry or comment field.  However, we already have data in this field and I don't want to retype all the information.  Therefore, I wanted to be able to give them some guidelines on how much type can type in the field.

If I'm not mistaken there's no character limit imposed on the Short Text Entry (Textbox) field. I tested this assumption with 50,000 characters and still managed to submit the form without issues.

The data I pasted also posted on the Email Notification I received. And you're right, ideally, you wouldn't want to use this field for long texts or paragraphs. The Long Text Entry (Textarea) field was meant for that kind of job.

In case you see any problems with people typing in long texts on the Short Text Entry, let us know by either telling us how many characters were used (whitespaces and symbols included), or better yet, paste the exact text here so we can run some tests.
