My last 4 or 5 threads have been set as private without my input, why is this happening. At the time I was in (My Questions) so not sure if that has a bearing on it. It never did in the past. This question is not submitted in My Questions folder.

Support members will sometimes mark a thread as private to flag the thread as not available. This prevents other support members from answering.
Also a thread can be marked private to hide sensitive information. For example if a client gives negative feedback or criticism.

This I understand, but all my questions turn private when there is no reason that it should be.
Even this one went Private, did you do that because I Didn't.

I marked it as private to flag to the thread as taken.

I don't like this method because then my questions never appear on the main list. I see lots of new questions on the main list not private, why just mine. This is an informative method for users and they should be able to view all threads not just the ones JF wants then to see.
Perhaps another system to identify when a thread is taken is required.
Please don't use this unless it indeed must be used.

One other thing, when I try and edit some by turning off Mark As Private, they revert back to being Private again?

Sorry for the confusion. Our main purpose why we set some threads to Private is when there are sensitive pieces of information to discuss such as billing information, account details, emails, submission data, etc or the user requested the thread to be Private. We do have a system that handles the forum threads assignment for our support team. If you want the thread to be Public again, just edit the main post of the thread and unchecked the "Keep this question private" option.
If you are having problems making your thread public, can you provide us which thread you want to be public so we can further check?

You are probably expecting to see your threads in the forum as soon as you post them. This is not how it works. All threads will be visible (for you if private or for the publish if not) once a support team member answers them. Unanswered threads will remain invisible.
This is because the forum gets a lot of spams who are using black hat methods to advertise their scams.
Like explained above, if some threads you post become private automatically, this is because the system scan for possible critical information that you post that cannot be published. This is include, but is not limited to: Billing info, phone numbers, passwords, etc.

I tried to uncheck the Keep this submission Private on two threads and after hitting EDIT they keep going back to Private. I'm not concerned about it so let it go. If it occurs again I will advise.
No not at all, I don't expect that. I understand you have had to change the process over the years to block scammers, that is appreciated.
I think what bothered me the most was using this as a method of indicating to other supporters it was being handled.
"Support members will sometimes mark a thread as private to flag the thread as not available. This prevents other support members from answering."
"I marked it as private to flag to the thread as taken."
Thank you for the explanation on automatically setting to Private.
As usually you have covered all the bases.
Best regards Robert
