    Customizing Email Alert template

    Asked by cbclogic on August 15, 2012 at 12:18 PM

    I love the fact that I can style the email response, buold tables and so on. I would like to try that on my own. Jotform has an editor, however I am curious. How is that file saved? Is it an email response css style?

    If I understand your question correctly I would say that the file can be saved in 2 parts:

    1. CSS File - which handles the styling

    2. Javascript File - which handles the functionality

    If anything else please let me know.

    @cbclogic

    Our Compose Email wizard uses inline styling. That means there is no CSS file being saved - all styling can be found in the email's source code (you can get the email's source code by clicking the HTML button while in the Compose Email screen).

    It is possible to create your own email template in a separate HTML editor and import that template onto your form's email alert. However, like I said, you should avoid references to external CSS files as this would be stripped by the editor.

    No. Not really.
    In the email response area there is a table that is already in place created by Jotform. It has the Jotform logo and everything. It tables all of the form data and sends it in the response. I like to edit that and style it myself. I create new tables and place the data where I want it.
    My question is that table that is pre built, how is it done, where is it stored and how do you tell Jotform to write to that table?
    Thank you.

    Everything is done by server side scripts.

    @cbclogic

    The Compose Email Wizard provides a set of tools that will allow you to customize the table in the email alert body to your liking.

    Table tools (pictured below) will allow you to add/remove tables, insert rows and columns, or merge and delete table cells.

    Hover your mouse to a button in the compose email screen to learn what each of these buttons do.

    To place data on a specific table cell, you will have to generate the field's tag (enclosed in curly brackets) by clicking the appropriate field name in the tag generator list (pictured below).

    Note that it will only generate the tag for the form field value. The form labels (i.e., "Your Name") need to be manually entered in the table cells.

    Another important thing to remember is that once you modify an email alert, it will no longer automatically update itself when you add/remove/rename fields in the actual form. You will have to manually update your email alert template to reflect the changes.

    That’s okay. It’s just a great feature. It actually makes me the envy of the designers here. Jotform has been my little secret!
