    Feature request: Enable Matrix Survey Tool to create graph reports for individual elements

    Asked by markashton on January 24, 2011 at 07:16 AM

    Hi,

    The matrix survey tool is potentially great.

    However, one cannot use the fields within for show/hide conditions and significantly for graph reporting using the visual report builder.

    I really want to include this but the lack of reporting and the poor display in notifications is not good enough. My clients do not want to do the excel and charts themselves.

    Any chance of making this function skyrocket in value? It currently undermines the survey option. It would be great to see this implemented - I believe the competitive advantage against other providers would be enhanced. I am currently using another for this stuff but would like to use you lot.

    Regards Mark

    Thanks for sorting out the notification email reporting of results derived from the matrix survey tool.

    However, the matrix survey tool has one limitation that cripples its value. It is quite simply this ....

    "One cannot graph any of the data in a meaningful way"

    It has to be done in bulk (all the results combined) ... or not at all.... which is utterly meaningless and I would imagine no one has ever done.

    My clients don't want to make their own excel charts - they just won't do it.

    I fail to understand the logic behind this function ... anyone doing a survey wants to interpret the data ... but the facility isn't available in Jotform .... you have to take the raw data and do it all your self. So one is kind of led up the garden path as it "seems to be a matrix survey tool" but actually transpires to be a much lower value function with no reporting capability.

    Can you advise me on whether you would do the extra step on enabling jotform to be able to graph the indivdual elements of a survey.

    I'd be most grateful - been 13 months since I posted the original ;)

    The chart is generated for every matrix field and not per row options in it. To get the statistics of the individual elements it would have to be added as 1 single row entry per matrix question.
    You will have to create same number of matrix questions in your form for every individual elements of a survey.

    Hope this help answers your inquiry.

    Mmm? Respectfully Jonathan ... did you really read into what I was asking for?

    Your comments ...

    "The chart is generated for every matrix field and not per row options in it."
    It is obvious, on reading my post, that I understand this and that the whole point of my post is about the shortcoming of this aspect

    "To get the statistics of the individual elements it would have to be added as 1 single row entry per matrix question."
    Why bother with a matrix tool then? Just let people use radio buttons? Have you tried adding four matrix tool functions before? Try it - it looks a total mess and you have to repeat the question "How satisfied are you with ..." four times!

    "You will have to create same number of matrix questions in your form for every individual elements of a survey."
    Steve Jobs would have sacked you for that suggestion. I don't need an explanation of how to do a "hack" job with what we've already got. I'm advising you on a shortcoming with what could be a brilliant feature - but isn't. I've got a workaround in place but it is time consuming to implement and requires Injected CSS

    Hope this help answers your inquiry.
    Meant most respectfully .. it doesn't

    This is what I suggest ........ Enable graphing on all individual elements of the matrix tool or do away with it as it serves to waste time whereby users get to the point where they realise they can't do the really important thing with it.

    Many thanks

    Regards Mark

    Hi Mark,

    My apologies if you find my reply a bit off on your end. I have no such intention.
    I did read what you were asking for, reviewed it and tried to address them in a supportive manner. I am familiar with your question already as it was asked in this forum more than several times. In fact, before I provided the reply, I did a quick search on this forum and decided for the best way to address it.

    I will assign your suggestion to our Next Level support. I am sure they will have better answer for us on this.

    Thanks Mark for your suggestions. We will work on making the matrix tool reporting better. I'm pretty sure Steve Jobs wouldn't let a matrix field in his product. :) When you have too many features, some will be executed badly. Their philosophy is to have less features but make them perfect.

    Thanks for your responses. The matrix tool is 95% there. It's just that the 5% left out is a deal-breaker and so its a great shame. I keep coming back to try it out hoping its been upgraded.

    What I currently do is use inject CSS to get this effect ....

    PS it isn't all that CSS - I stripped down a form for this demo.

    Hi,

    Ok I have a sector of clients who do all their work like neanderthals on paper.

    The forms will be primarily be filled in on mobiles i.e. smartphones.

    This is where the matrix tool is great. Why?

    1) Its very space effective on screen

    2) It is very user-friendly i.e. very easy to fill in

    I'm itching to use this function but need the graphing capability ... and Aytekin has put my hopes up. Jonathan advises it is marked with Important priority ...

    Would it be remiss of me to ask whether it may be done soon ... as opposed to me deploying this hack job as per here: http://form.jotformpro.com/form/20805064832954

    If you do it I'll post an article re. jotform and how the matrix tool should be used on a mobile ...

    Hi,

    The form here: http://form.jotformpro.com/form/20873464747968 is how I deal with the insufficiencies of the conceptually brilliant but 'flawed from a reporting perspective' matrix tool.

    Please view on a desktop browser - mimics the matrix tool idea but provides the necessary reporting as they are all independent radio button fields. Note the injected CSS workaround.

    But view on an Iphone - i.e. smartphone. The mobile-phone friendly thing kicks in and puts a top label alignment. Not what I want as it ruins the layout. The form is to be used in an exclusively mobile environment you see.

    Would you be kind enough to advise me whether I can override this with injected CSS and what that might be. I'd be very grateful.

    PS I've posted it in this post so that those who are interested in a workaround can see how that is achieved and so that Aytekin can see the current state of play.

    Thanks, Regards Mark

    You can clone the form here:

    http://jotform.me/form/20892257440454

    As for the CSS, this are what I did.

    #mark_100 {
    position:absolute;
    top: 0;
    padding-bottom: 150px;
    }
    .form-multiple-column .form-radio-item
    {
    width: 45px;
    color: white;
    }
    .form-radio-item
    {
    margin-top: 0;
    }
    #label_49{
    display: inline;
    float: left;
    }
    #id_49 {
    display: inline;
    float: left;
    padding-bottom: 0;
    padding-right: 0;
    padding-top: 0;
    }
    #label_50{
    display: inline;
    float: left;
    }
    #id_50 {
    display: inline;
    float: left;
    padding-bottom: 0;
    padding-right: 0;
    padding-top: 0;
    }
    #label_51{
    display: inline;
    float: left;
    }
    #id_51 {
    display: inline;
    float: left;
    padding-bottom: 0;
    padding-right: 0;
    padding-top: 0;
    }
    #label_52{
    display: inline;
    float: left;
    }
    #id_52 {
    display: inline;
    float: left;
    padding-bottom: 0;
    padding-right: 0;
    padding-top: 0;
    }
    #label_53{
    display: inline;
    float: left;
    }
    #id_53 {
    display: inline;
    float: left;
    padding-bottom: 0;
    padding-right: 0;
    padding-top: 0;
    }

    The #mark_100 is a custom tag id I created for the free text(html) so I can call it on the CSS. I also added the styles for the label id's that float:left and display:inline

    Thanks.

    For what it's worth, reducing the CSS provided above to the following would achieve the same result:

    #mark_100 {
    position: absolute;
    top: 0;
    padding-bottom: 150px;
    }

    .form-multiple-column
    .form-radio-item {
    width: 45px;
    color: #FFF;
    }

    .form-radio-item {
    margin-top: 0;
    }

    #id_49, #label_49,
    #id_50, #label_50,
    #id_51, #label_51,
    #id_52, #label_52,
    #id_53, #label_53 {
    display: inline;
    float: left;
    }

    #id_49, #id_50, #id_51,
    #id_52, #id_53 {
    padding: 0 0 0 12px;
    }

    Anyway, we'll see how best we can accommodate your request.

    With the limited space available on mobile devices, perhaps it would be better to shorten the column labels to as few characters as possible and include a free text element below the table that would have a key with the labels' meanings as follows:

    VS = Very Satisfied
    S = Satisfied
    N = Neutral
    D = Dissatisfied

    Hi,

    Please see this form, designed for mobile, with a width of 320px.

    http://form.jotformpro.com/form/21135325323946

    So, I'm working with  my 'custom matrix tool hack'  - so that I can provide a good experience to the user and actually graph the data - as the matrix tool is incapable of doing this.

    But, try and put an Iphone in landscape mode - the whole thing goofs with the alignment.

    Anyone any ideas on this please?

    Is there a way to prevent the free text from resizing to the screen using inject CSS.

    Many thanks

    Hi idarktech,

    I understand your busy, what with all the integrations I see popping up, et al. It's just that I put this request in this long ago ..... take a deep breath ....

    11,160 hours ago .... translates as .... 15 months .... 1 1/4 years

    The reason I keep on about it is because unless I do... nothing will happen. It has recently been given high priority .. well 1 month ago exactly.

    The lack of reporting on the matrix tool individual elements has forced me to entertain the worlds greatest hack job with inject css ... to give the visual effect of the matrix tool.

    Just to put it in perspective .... I know that the salesforce integration hadn't even been conceived as an idea when I made this suggestion back in the dark ages .... so it leads me to conclude that time is an irrelevant factor in your priority decision-making.

    Therefore the only weapon at my disposal is to be a major pain in the ass and keep this on the radar ;)

    Thanks Mark

    You know what ... the workaround I've deployed here took blood sweat and tears ..... tens of hours ...

    The thing is it doesn't work either .... it doesn't render properly on Iphones, Blacberries, etc .... cannot be reproduced consistently ..... and then when you get to a point of working ... the form stops updating.

    I'm awaiting on this problem ... but I'm just going backwards.

    here's the thing ....

    How does one actually do a survey on jotform that can be graphed ..... answer ... you can't!

    In a nutshell ... here's my exam question ...

    The Matrix Survey Tool is entirely pointless because one cannot look at results in a meaningful way. Discuss?

    Can you advise me why you wouldn't want to enable this function so that one can graph all the answers?

    Eduardo,

    You strive to prioritize and continuosly improve your builder?

    Then remove the matrix survey tool.

    A tool is something that magnifies the power of a human.

    It doesn't ... it's useless ... actually its worse than that ...

    It misleads the human into thinking he/she will get value and have some sweet reporting. So after putting time into developing a form one finds that all that is spat out is raw data ... with no possibility of seeing the data in a meaningful way.

    Consequently, the human gets angry with the SAAS service for leading one up the garden path ... a service that promises to make all this stuff simpler. Existing loyal customers tire ... and move to other services like Formstack and Logiforms to perform this elementary function.

    None of you lot use the matrix survey tool over at jotform do you?

    I know this because its currently a steaming pile that with one change could become a beautiful wedding cake.

    Could you do me a favour and find me someone in Jotform who has ever used this function?

    I bet President Obamas form didn't use it in its successful deployment ;-)

    You should remove it ... especially from all those daft templates that house it - its like a ticking timebomb that will explode and blow up Jotform ... that's a metaphor by the way just to be clear.

    Thanks, see if you can needle Aytekin to get this sorted ... I've been waiting long enough ... I've never heard a counter argument to the contrary.

    Regards Mark

    So, no response to this .... and we still have a tool that claims to be a survey tool yet allows no reporting whatsoever ... there is a hack but it takes a lot of sweat and tears ...

    Could i request again that for the survey matrix tool - the individual elements be able to be graphed.

    The survey matrix tool would be what it is mean't to be then.

    Consider President Obama's convo with his PR Team ...

    "So, let me look at how we're doing"

    "I'll forward all the submission emails to you sir"

    "Don't bother, just send me the pie charts - I need a quick glance"

    "There are no pie charts Sir, just the email submissions"

    "What? this jotform survey can't graph the data?"

    "No sir, we can make one massive pie chart out of all the data but you won't be able to make head or tale of it. we used this thing called the matrix survey tool and there was something of an oversight ... "

    "Are you kidding me Johnson? ..."

    ;-)

    See this: http://form.jotformpro.com/form/30553308409956

    Looks like the matrix tool eh? Isn't ... applied the CSS styling below that gives it the same visual ... unfortunately the headers to the pie charts all say ... How satisfied are you with the chocolate

    Bummer ... anyone assigned to this then?????

    Aytekin ... you thanked me for reminding you about this last April !!

    #id_59 .form-label-top, #id_60 .form-label-top {display: none;}

    #cid_59 tr:first-child, #cid_60 tr:first-child {visibility: hidden;}

    .form-matrix-row-headers {width:50px;}

    #id_59 {top: -50px;}

    #id_60 {top: -100px;}

    #id_57 {z-index: 1100;}

    #id_59 {z-index: 1000;}

    By the time you requested this feature, the development team was lacking of enough manpower. However, we have created a maintenance team which is like a junior development team and takes care of tickets . Hopefully this one will be speed up

    I'll send a message regarding to this thread to Aytekin. I cannot promise anything,though

    We work on the issues depending on the importance. Matrix fields are not used a lot. So, they are not high priority.

    This ticket is still in our list. But, thanks for the reminder.

    Aytekin,

    That's like saying "Square wheels are not used much on cars so we're not going to fix them!"

    The matrix field is not used a lot because it's useless in its current state. People want to graph the data in a meaningful way. See all my many posts above.

    In contradiction, why do loads of the form survey templates have the matrix tool in them then? (even if they shouldn't be because it doesn't work)

    I've spent days as you will see from this thread to try and come up with an alternative ... one that has taken up support's time by the bucketload.

    In a nutshell jotform has no way to create an efficient space effective quantitative analysis form... which is absolutely mind-boggling. The matrix tool is perfect for this.

    I've been asking for this enhancement for over 2 years.

    Why do I want it? Because I need it for all my mobile forms - we're moving into a mobile era - and this tool saves tonnes of space.

    What would it cost to get this implemented then?

    Thanks Mark

    Dare I even raise the ugly head of this "harlot of posts" ?

    Just to give you a heads-up ... I'll be pursuing this like a b***h on heat in the next month ....

    I spot Aytekin's comment above that the Matrix Tool is not used a lot ... and yet a little trip through the extensive gallery reveals billions of templates with the Matrix Tool implemented.

    Henry Ford said "If I'd asked people what they wanted they'd have said faster horses"

    Is it too much to ask to be able to be able to graph individual elements of matrix reports.

    Thanks, Your Nemesis, Mark

    Hello Mark

    We understand that it would bea great idea to graph individual elements of matrix reports. However, as you already might know, feature requests are prioritized, the most requested ones are the implemented ones

    I have refreshed this ticket. Let's see what Aytekin has to say about this

    Come on ... you can't graph anything with your quantitative survey tool ... it's a joke.

    Do you think people want to look at a list of "fairly satisfieds" in a big list and then make an educated guess on how it compares to the others? That's all you can do with your matrix tool.

    Try Jeanette ... use the matrix tool  ... do a simple form ... and try to create graphs from the data ... let me know how you got on.

    Feature Requests are prioritised? I'd like to see that list ... Jan 24th 2011 ... I first submitted this two and a half years ago.

    Maybe I'm wrong then ... maybe nobody does want to graph any quantitaive data ... mmm?

    Hi,

    This was set to Priority Important about the same time that Bill Clinton was elected.

    To be clear ... I'd love to be able to use the matrix tool and display a chart for each question ... as per this 2 and a half year thread.

    From a mobile perspective ... the matrix tool is space effective and touch friendly.

    Everything is great except one cannot report the results via graphs.

    Can I flag this up again please ... It would be a great addition.

    I'll happily pay for it ....

    Regards Mark

    PS Don't give me the ... thanks for your patience ... we can't take payments ... have a nice day speech please ;-)

    Ok Mark =)

    We understand you want to be able to use the matrix tool and display a chart for each question rather than showing it as a whole. It would be in fact a  good  feature

    I've just sent a message  to our developers, we will see what they say....until then we must wait = be patience ;)

    Cheers!

    @Jeanette

    You can't really use the word "Patience" in relation to a request that is over two and a half years old.

    @Aytekin

    What do you reckon man?

    What this will mean for me ... I will be able to deply a Quantitative Tool for Market Researchers on mobiles.

    Thanks Mark

    My instincts tell me this will just be a pipedream.

    I've been wrapping on about it for years.

    If it really didn't have any merit I would have forgotten about it long ago.

    To be clear .... for the matrix survey tool ... I would just like to be able to create graph reports for individual elements.

    Thanks

    Having this thread for one year or two years wouldn't mean that our developers rejected the request. We have this in the queue but NOT into the list of priorities. Thanks

    Oh right ....

    So Jonathan was bullshitting then was he in his post of ...

    Answered by jonathan on March 21, 2012 at 12:47 PM

    where he said it was marked as Important?

    Important 1.5 years ago ... not now though.

    Tell you what ... you should take that sorry excuse of a function off the system ... it doesn't work ... nobody can do anything with the data ... and it wastes everyone's time.

    It's like a broken pencil ... pointless !

    If you can't see that ... which you can't ... it's because you don't use the product in a commercial way.

    What is the point of providing a tool to collect quant data without providing any means to analyse it.

    Absolutely ridiculous ...

    I'm fed up of these smokescreen answers too ... when I've obviously put in hours trying to get this function to have some value for jotform users.

    It's like giving a dog a food bowl ... and never filling it ...

    Totally fed up ... big breath ...

    Does it have no priority?

    Hi Mark,

    I'm sorry for my terms. What I meant to say is that this Feature Request has been forwarded to our developers and already at their queue but NOT on the top of all the requested features. Every feature request has it's own priority, but for each of these there is an order in which they are implemented after careful consideration.

    Thank you!

    It's alright Welvin,

    I was just sounding off... sorry.

    Consider ... smartphones ... the space saved by using the matrix tool ... this is how I want to use it.

    Thanks Mark

    @Aytekin,

    Could you see your way to implementing this please.

    Very useful for Quantitative studies on a smartphone.

    Requires the ability to graph each individual element.

    I'd pay for this ... can't be that hardsurely.

    Thanks Mark

    @Aytekin,

    Would you be kind enough to enable individual reporting on the matrix tool as described in this three year thread.

    One cannot graph any data in a meaningful way. so its useless as it stands.

    It would be a great tool if the visual report buider could graph each individual question within the matrix.

    I really long for it

    Thanks, your trusty customer, Mark

    Hi, Mark

    I will pass your last 2 posts to Aytekin. Devs are busy this and next week with a major project. But hopefully this will be prioritized once they finish.

    Jeanette,

    Will you please? The matrix tool allows one to be very space effective on smartphones ... but I have to do a massive CSS hack with the radio button function to mimic the same visual effect.

    Currently, one cannot do anything meaningful with the data with the matrix tool ... it cannot be graphed ... so I am at a loss.

    It would be a fantastic addition ... and I'm sure many would use the matrix tool.

    Many Thanks

    Regards Mark

    Hi Mark,

    Last week I updated the visual reporting features for matrix questions. You should be able to choose the answers for an individual matrix row to use for data on your charts. Is this what you are requiring?

    Thanks

    Hi Mark,

    Just to follow up because I don't think I explained that very well. When adding a chart to your visual reports you will now be able to choose an individual matrix row as the data for the chart by selecting the row from the question drop down list in the chart configuration.

    If you had something different in mind please let me know as I am currently working on improving our visual reporting features.

    Thanks

    Paul

    Paul,

    From the initial test I have done ... this is exactly what I wanted .. and am delighted.

    Is the process of reporting feature updates a bit hit and miss? Unless I'd have enquired I wouldn't have known ... but I'm the guy who has been asking for this for three years!

    Anyhow ... great ... let me test it properly.

    I'll come back if necessary

    Thanks Regards mark

    Hi Mark,

    We noticed a number of requests in the forums for improving the visual reporting features so I am dedicating my time to improving our features in this area.

    Unfortuntely, I didn't notice this thread after I had completed the feature which is why you were not notified, sorry.

    Please let me know if any improvements are required.

    Thanks
