Is there a way to remove the empty field at the top of a dropdown field?

Is there a way to get remove the empty field at the top of a drop down field?  This is the field:

Please note that this empty field is designed the way it is in order to represent the no selection, and while it's not possible to remove it, it is possible to show a text in its place, by turning on the "Show Text in Empty Option" option as shown here:
