Is there a way to change question form element type?

I have a question where I used a Numeric field. I now wish I had used a short text field to allow for alpha numeric entries.

The only way I can see around this is to create another field, then hide the current field because I realize if I a delete the current field I will loose the data for the submissions already made with that field (ie. column).

It would be nice if I could convert the field without having to have two fields of data. I'm not sure if the database actually stores the field data in specific datatypes or if it is just the form element that is particular to the type.

Unfortunately, there is no option on switching a of question to a different field type. So yes, for your case, you can just hide the original field and add a new one.

Another method is by using the import app. Using this method, you will need to get a back-up of your data to Excel or CSV. Then use the import app to import data back into your form, but this time by assigning the column in your spreadsheet to a certain field. But before you jump into action, try to check this guide first and likewise do some preliminary tests to practice on how to use the app:  https://www.jotform.com/help/308-Import-App-Easily-Import-Your-Excel-or-CSV-Data-into-JotForm

    Thanks.

Sorry for the delay in responding to this. I just found the time to wade through the instructions you provided (see link above).

With all due respect, this is not even worth considering, and frankly ridiculous. My form has has almost 200 fields (i.e. columns).

The amount of effort to resolve this relatively common situation is insane. I have dealt with databases and spreadsheets for over 30 years and have witnessed this situation countless times due unforeseen changes. I have never seen a system that would not allow me to resolve this easily.

Furthermore, it seems that I will loose or change the submission ID and the IP address.

Very frustrating. This is a poor band aid solution.
