Multiple choice data

We have a filed where the answer if to tick one or more boxes. 

We are struggling to report on the data as it seems to like the answers i.e.

If Someone select A we get and can report on A 

If someone selects B we get and can report on B 

However if someone selects A and AB we get A&B in the data so cant count the total number of A's as we get a separate count as A;B in excel pivot tables. 

Can you advise
