i have customers who think they paid when they haven't. how can they get verification payment went through?

I would recommend you to just add an email auto-responder to your form, it will be sent to your submitter and you may edit it to include just the needed information.
You just need to include the payment field since it will contain the payment information that will look like this:
The same info will be displayed on the submissions page so you can confirm the payment has been processed.
