You can't customize it any more than that? For example, getting rid of my last name?

The Custom URL can only customized the way it was presented on the guide where you posted this comment.

The URL will always be in this format:
your_username can be changed by us upon your request, and the your_preferred_custom_text part can be customized by you upon your discretion.
I'm afraid you can't get rid of the username from the URL, it will always be included there to keep the URL unique from other users. If you need to use your very own customized URL, you can try approaching this differently by using Custom Domains instead.
Just keep in mind that you should be familiar with DNS settings. If not, please contact with your DNS/hosting provider before changing your DNS. Also not that HTTPS (SSL) is currently not supported.
