We have this joint account set up, which uses the above username, but my email address is linked to it. I want to create a completely separate account for another purpose but it won't let me do this as it says the email address is already registered.

You should use another email, or you can open a sub user for this account. If you want to do that follow these steps: Click to your avatar, and then click Settings button. After that click User and then Create New Sub User. It will open another view. And you should put the email and you can choose which forms that user it is able to see.

Sorry but this is not a possible solution. I do not have another email address, nor wish to create one, and I don't want a new account to have any connection with the other one which I manage for someone else.

I would like to apologize for any inconvenience, however, like what @lumiardian have mentioned, you can only register another account without using an email address that is already associated with an existing JotForm account.
Can you help us understand what exactly are you trying to do by providing us more details, please?
