Is JotForms having problems with Captcha Availability?

Asked by mmartin077 on September 16, 2012 at 11:02 AM

    Hello,

Is JotForms having problems with Captcha availabilty?

Twice now in the last 3 days I was on my website checking things out and the Captcha form is showing as not available.  Without this, I can not accept online orders.  When users enter there data and get to the bottom of the form to enter the Captcha, its not available and they have to refresh the browser causing them to lose all of their entered data.

Can you please verify the log files to be sure Captcha is working properly.  Something is not right.

I did some testing and was able to reproduce the problem. Please try embedding your form into your website with an iFrame to see if that corrects the issue.

If it does not please let us know.

    Hi mmartin077,

I did some testing on your link in updated version of Firefox, Chrome and IE, and I can view it without error. Have you tried embeding your form in Iframe format? Please also check this.

    Hope this helps you.

Hi, this website http://www.medicalalertdiscount.com/order.html  seems to be down currently. We need to check the embed method use for the form, and at the same time, check if its using a secure protocol or https.

The sceenshot you provided form using IE9 seems to be displaying 'certficate error'

    Will await your updates.

    Thanks.

OK. The website seems to be back online again. I was able to checked that it is using script embed code and also uses a secure protocol (https).

I was able to test it on IE9 & 8 browsers, and it seems to be fine though.

Can you please update us if this is still not working?

    Thanks.

Hello, I changed my webform to an iFrame to bring in the JotForm that was suggested previously. When I do, I get the error that is attached..... something about approving to run a JS (JavaScript?) file. Don't think this is supposed to happen. Here is my iFrame code:

    The website is: www.MedicalAlertDiscount.com/order2.html . Thanks,Michael

Well I was able to find the JS Error you were refering to. All that does is approves or disapproves to run Javascipt on a website that uses some javascripting in it's code so that's pretty much irrelevant as to the problem at at hand since it is coming and going and usually a refresh fixes it.

Have you tried running your browser with all your addons disabled?

I understand & know that a simple refresh fixes the problem. My concern is over the non technical customers that don't know to refresh, see a security warning and then leave my website to go to competitor website. I'm trying to keep this as simple as possible for them, and prevent anything that might prevent a sale. I appreciate your help. Thanks,Michael

    @mmartin077

It's working fine on my IE8 browser, even works on IE9, Chrome and FF. I guess this may be due to some browsers addons or plugins which affects the page content, not quite sure but it seems to be working fine with my fresh browsers. Actually, they don't need to refresh the whole page in order for the captcha to load properly but instead just clicking the refresh catpcha button. This might not be a good solution for them but it helps not to lose their data. You can also add a message tip on your captcha tool about "refreshing the captcha by clicking on its button", this would be a big help for them.

Thanks and apologies for this inconveniences.

Adding a message above the Captcha to click the refresh in case it is not available is a good idea. Thank you.Michael

Hello, I received another error with the Captcha code. I pressed the refresh icon on the Captcha box and received the error that is inside the box. Any ideas? Website URL is: www.medicalalertdiscount.com/order2.html (NOTE: I know when I press the button "Show Content" in the error message at the bottom that the Captcha will come up correctly, but I need to be able to PREVENT the error message from coming up at all. The reason is that when a user gets to this page, they have credit card in hand and is about to make a purchase. When they get 'security' issues, they put their credit card away and I lose the sale. Any help will be appreciated.) Thanks,Michael

Well the error message wasn't appearing until we put the iFrame in so you might as well take that off and re-embed the original code to avoid the JS but other then that I wasn't seeing any other errors other than the timing out of the Captcha Field causing it not to load. After you refresh it with the arrow it works perfectly fine in several browsers except for that first time. The only two browsers I got the error in were IE and Firefox.

Are you getting any other errors related? And if so, which ones exactly?

I'll have to do some more testing to see what else I can come up with.

    @Michael

From what I can see on your website so far, the form is embedded using the script code

Have you tried instead using the iframe code? Please try if not yet done. Perhaps the issue will go away using the iframe code.

Please correct if I am looking at the wrong form/website instead.

    Thanks.

Actually go ahead and try what my colleague Jonathan has mentioned first to see if that solves the issue. If not, you may need to revert back for now.

Your captcha is loading fine from my end in IE9. However, you may also try to switch our default captcha to the Google reCaptcha by enabling that option through the field properties to see if that makes any difference from your side.

Guys, I appreciate everyone's input / feedback. Ya'll are going above & beyond, thank you. Regarding the message below & code snipet.... I do have an iframe in my code. I changed it two email sessions ago when someone suggested it. I just verified it was in there. I did change the Captcha to ReCaptcha. It seems to be working fine now. I reloaded a new browser and no errors show up. Thank you. One last question....if I have errors again, what do you think of the solution if I add a "slider" control and tell the user to slide the control "8" or something like that, and then add a conditional statement to HIDE the Submit button until the slide control has the correct value. Would that offer any protection? Thanks for ALL of your help. Michael Date: Mon, 17 Sep 2012 19:52:20 -0400

Hello mmartin077.  That would be possible and is actually do-able.  I just tried creating a form to test if it's possbile using the slider and this is the result:

    http://form.jotform.me/form/22608655123451

You also cannot modify the content of the slider with using URL parameters so it's somehow a good security measure against bots and spammers
