Blank edit text box

How can I edit text in a form? I have tried looking through and searching in FAQs, forum, user guides, etc. and cannot find anyone who is having the same problem. When I click on 'edit text' I only see a blank screen that does not permit me to add any text. I can only add in the tiny box under general text properties. I also cannot format. Please help!!
