I just work for an hour on a translation of a form (from English to Spanish) only to lose it all when I attempted to switch the primary language on the form to spanish and back. An entire hour of work gone in an instant with no warning. Is there anyway to retrieve that? If not can this functionality be improved, at least a message warning of the data loss or retaining the data if not?

You can revert your form to a version before your translation was removed.
When the primary language is changed the translation should not be removed. Did you use 'Set Primary' option inside of the Translations? I tested this option on my demo form and the translations were not removed.
The translation will be removed only if you delete the Form Language.
