Get Referrer widget picks up some URLs but not others

We've used Get Referrer successfully for other forms, but in our most recent form the referrer is only being reported for certain referrers and not others (i.e. it seems to be recording only particular referring URLs; otherwise the field is just blank). It will pick up the URL from our own website and one advertising platform, but it won't record the URLs of the other advertising platforms that we used (however it does record these URLs in other forms that we use). So the issue is specific to only one form.

We have the form embedded in multiple pages, but this is one example - https://www.e-motor.com.au/drive-now-pay-later/

Here is the form URL - https://form.jotform.co/81348115983866

    Thank you!

I did test your embedded form by sending a test submission and it seems the referrer page was captured successfully. Please check the screenshot below:

I would suggest you to please test your form again get back to us if the issue persists.

Thanks for getting back to me.

I just tested again from this URL (https://www.e-motor.com.au/driveandpaygumtree/) and it didn't record the URL for me (when I navigated from an advertising platform that we use). This is the same form that I posted before, but on a different landing page.

This is how the same referrer is recorded in another form.

I have tried submitting the form by opening it directly and from the forum post which seems the widget is working fine.

This is how the same referrer is recorded in another form.

Do you mean to say that the widget is recording differently on a separate form? If so, could you provide us with the form URL so that we can check it further?

    Thanks!

The widget still isn't recording the URLs for two specific URLs - it works fine for others, but just not for those two specific URLs.

The previous form that we have used where the widget recorded all URLs with no issues was this form https://form.jotform.co/80292622660858

    I have accessed your pages through this forum thread and tested the form, the referrer widget appears to be working properly;

    https://www.e-motor.com.au/driveandpaygumtree/

    https://www.e-motor.com.au/drive-now-pay-later/

We need to know what platforms are you referring to. If possible, we have to test the forms through that website to see if we can also replicate it here.

I presumed these forms are available for your prospects. I would suggest reaching out to those submitters whos referrer is blank to know if they have an adblocker or a privacy shield installed on their computer/browser.

Is this URL recording for you when you test it?

    https://www.e-motor.com.au/driveandpaygumtree/

Because this is the URL that is not recording for us.

I clicked on the URL on this thread and submitted the form. The submission recorded with the thread URL in the widget without any issue. When I tried to submit the form by opening it directly using the form URL, it is displaying blank since there is no referrer. As I check the submissions, there are few submissions referred from Facebook and it appears to be working fine.

Did you share the direct link to the form with your users which could be receiving the referrer widget blank?

The prospects click on the URL (e.g. https://www.e-motor.com.au/driveandpaygumtree/) in the ad listing on Gumtree (the third party site). That URL (https://www.e-motor.com.au/driveandpaygumtree/) is the landing page which contains the form.

This prospect journey has (in other forms) resulted in the URL (https://www.e-motor.com.au/driveandpaygumtree/) being recorded as the referrer.

When you say user click on the "ad listing on Gumtree (the third party site)" which has the URL on which user click, I would suggest you to please let us know the URL of the third part site and we will take a look.

Please note that get referrer widget will capture the URL of the page form where you visit the page where the form is embedded. Since I visited the (https://www.e-motor.com.au/driveandpaygumtree/) form this thread, the form I submitted captured the URL of the thread in the submission.

We will wait for your response.

Here is a link to the listing on Gumtree:

    https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/williamstown-north/cars-vans-utes/drive-now-pay-later-115pw-5-yr-warranty-falcon-fg-xr6/1183809836

You should find the URL in this listing - prospects just click on this link and it takes them to the URL where the form is embedded. So in this example I suppose the ad listing URL (https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/williamstown-north/cars-vans-utes/drive-now-pay-later-115pw-5-yr-warranty-falcon-fg-xr6/1183809836) should be recorded rather than https://www.e-motor.com.au/driveandpaygumtree/?

I understand that the widget records the URL from which the user came directly prior to the URL with the form; however, why would it previously have recorded the URL where the form is embedded (i.e in the previous version of the form the widget recorded https://www.e-motor.com.au/driveandpaygumtree/ as the referrer)?

I did test your embedded form and I am able to replicate the issue you are having. The submission record does not include the referrer URL.

It seems the link which you have added in Gumtree page is not direct URL of your e-motor.com page where the form is embedded. The link which you have added is for a different URL but the display text is for e-motor.com page. Please check the screenshot below:

    1528182633gumtreeURL Screenshot 10

I would suggest you to please use the direct URL of your https://www.e-motor.com.au/driveandpaygumtree/ page and that should solve your problem.

Are you aware that there is an HTTP header that a server can send to a browser, stating that the referrer is not to be passed onwards? This may or may not be causing your issue.
