How do I change the properties of the text boxes? I'd like to create a frame, and have the background be either transparent or grey.

You can spice up your text boxes by injecting custom css codes to your form. Here's a guide: How to Inject Custom CSS Codes to your Form.
JotForm's text box class is .form-textbox, check some of the basic css codes here: Customize your Form using Custom CSS Codes. If you need further assistance about this, just let us know.
With regards to changing the form background color, just go to Form Style tab then click Background and select your background color as seen on that guide.
