How to hide fields on customized emails?

I'm looking to build customized emails with 'hide empty fields' enabled.  But it seems that as soon as I create any kind of email that's different from the default, this doesn't work - how do I do this?

Please be noted that the empty fields can be hidden only when the default table layout is used. If the fields are used in the customized email, unfortunately, it is not possible to hide the field label when the field is not filled.

Ok what if I've deleted the default table, how do I get it back?

You may add a new notification/auto responder to the form so that it shall be displaying all the fields on the form with default table.
