i have chosen european date format and this shows correctly (DDMMYYYY), but regardless of the language used in creating the form (in this instance Norwegian), the output is always in English i.e. 21 May 1956, instead of 21 Mai 1956.
I also would like to present this as 21.05.1956, is this possible?

I just checked in my own MyForms that when you change your language at the bottom as shown here:
http://screencast.com/t/oUUUctLab8wS, the values in the options(say in Birth Date Picker) will also adapt to that language. This should apply to all new submissions as they will be using those new values.

this solves the problem for new forms, but not for old. I pressume they were made in English originally. I shall remove and replace the date picker to see if it then works. But I would still like to present it in the format " 21.05.2013 ". Is this not possible?

You should be able to affect that in the form editor itself but that affects the form view only.
The old submissions will keep the language it was recorded on and the format sticks to mmddyyyy
