While doing a preview test, suddenly prompted to redo the recaptcha with error message that it expired, and then went to the start of the questionnaire.
Is this normal, and how long is a recaptcha verified for?

Hello Jeff,
Captcha can be expired within 5 minutes usually. If your form is very long, I can suggest to add captcha as the very last field. This should help to prevent expire issues.

Yes, form is long and takes some effort to complete.... be bad if people lose 30 minutes of completion time if expired... so I guess you are sure that moving to end will solve issue then?
Thanks, Jeff

Actually, going to see if can get away with skipping it anyway... well, how much of a risk is there with bots?

This decision is up to you only. Captcha is a security measurement. If you do not publish your form on a highly visited web site, but share it to your respondents directly, I think you can remove captcha for now.

I understand, thanks.
However, I removed captcha, but just got a prompt to "Select all images with traffic lights", before allowing to proceed without needing to start over. Why if removed captcha?

Hello Jeff,
I think there may be captcha also enabled in form settings. Please check as shown on screenshot:
