When I testing the autoresponder, I receive email with the same exact text that was in the editor, including the fields placeholders

When I test-emailed the autoresponder several times, all I received was an email with the same exact text that was in the editor, including the {placeholders} themselves.  None of the {placeholders} showed any values that would allow me to "test" the resulting output.  So the email responder seems useless. 

I assume you have tested the Autoresponder email by clicking 'TEST EMAIL' button. This button will indeed send default texts to email associated with account. I can recommend to perform a real submission to your form (same as your respondents would do).
