Limiting submission based off a one time unique serial key from a list.

Asked by webusermy on April 09, 2013 at 09:44 PM

The reason I need this function/feature is because I need to run a very private and confidential survey, therefore I can not limit the submission base off something identifiable like their names, user id, emails etc. as doing so would affect the honesty of the participants in fear that they could be identified. Blocking via cookie and IP address is not an option as there is a high chance that more than one users would be using it on a shared network, with the same IP address.

This survey also needs to be limited to only one submission per user so that it can not be abused with multiple submissions as to skew the data.

What I would want to have is, upon submission of a form, users are required to enter a unique serial key that will be provided to them in a non identifiable manner. The form would then validate the key with a list in which if the key is valid, the form would be submitted as per normal, and the key will be made invalidated.

User submits form with the entered serial key value "SERIAL01".

System will look in a pre-populated list for the serial key value "SERIAL01". If the value exists, the form submission will proceed, and the key value "SERIAL01" will be flagged, stopping it from being used a second time with a warning/alert that the key has already been used. (customised text would be great) If it does not exist, a warning/alert will be shown stating that the key does not exists. (customised tet would be great)

Unfortunately, we don't have such function available. I think using the Limit Form based on a Unique Question function will work. I've made a workaround.

    Check this form: http://form.jotformpro.com/form/30992334288967

Using Show/Hide Condition, if "Serial Number" is entered correctly, the next button will show and they will be able to proceed. Although, they can repeat the process, but they will not be able to submit the form since Serial Number is limited or is for single use only based on the settings.

    You will have to add the Serial Numbers and use them in the conditional logic (Show/Hide Condition);

Please try to submit the form (twice) using one of the Serial Numbers provided in the image. You will see the error.

That works great. Unfortunately, I am expected to be using it for a potential of 3,000 responses.. and that will only continue to grow as the organisation grows. It will just mean some extra work having to repeat the serial number field 3,000 times or more, but at least it's a possible work around for now.

Thank you very much for this workaround suggestion! :)

My apologize for not coming back that quick!

Yes, that's one of the factor to consider. Having them (serials) to enter into the Conditional Logic one by one will require extra effort or additional hours. The advantage of copy-pasting them into a single area is always a good option.

Anyway, I see that this is a good additional function aside from the given workaround. Let me forward this thread to our developers as a feature request. I can't say anything about the possibility of this function but if updates will be made, we'll surely let you know through this thread.

It has been 4 months since this was last asked.

Has there been any progress with regards to this function? Or the workaround will still need to be used?

    Many thanks!

    Kind Regards

I would like to inform you that the request for this function was already submitted to our dev team. This is still an Open feature request.

However, we will not be able to provide you any ETA or time table as to when this will be done. As of now, this is also not on the high priority list.

You will need to use the suggested workaround for now.

    Many thanks for the respons.

Good to hear that it's submitted to the dev team. The workaround is being used currently. It just saves us one week of man power work that's all. :)

Greetings, it has been over a year since I last visit this issue.

Has there been a fix for this? Or maybe even a faster way to input the serial number. I'm talking about 3000-5000 over submissions and unique serial ID. Keying them in manually one at a time is silly when in the world of IT there should be a function to be able to import via text document or something.

Hoping to hear some good news so that I may actually use your product.

    Thank you and kind regards.

Our sincere apologies for not updating this thread. Unfortunately, we haven't heard any from our developers after your last reply. The request is still open, but let's be honest that the priority of this thread isn't that high. We have been updating our features and I think we have new ones, but the number is based on the priority and volume of request from the other users. But rest assured that this request won't be cancelled and if there are updates, you should know it via this thread. The only thing is that we can't give anyone a timeframe.

Thank you for your patience and understanding on this matter.

    Thank you for your response.

As I have unfortunately not been keeping track with all the added features since I last looked into your product over a year ago, could I get an update from you or someone who can answer my inquiry?

The the requirement I need here is to:

    1) Limit Submission to 1 per Serial Key

    2) Ability to import or add multiple Serial Keys at once

As of a year back, requirement 1 has a work around that worked great from a functionality point of view. Requirement 2 on the other hand was the roadblock as the rules had to be set manually. Have there been any update on requirement 2? Maybe a way to quickly clone/duplicate rules? Even that would speed up the process greatly as I would then only need to key in the serial numbers manually, as opposed to having to actually create the rules individually.

    Thanks for the assistance.

    Kind Regards

    Hello webusermy,

Unfortunately, we have not received any update form our back end team yet on this feature request.

Have there been any update on requirement 2? Maybe a way to quickly clone/duplicate rules?

Well it is now possible to duplicate conditions. Please check the screenshot below on how to duplicate conditions:

You may also like to take a look at our new addition in condition where you can add comma separated values with "Contains" condition to match the text. Please check the screenshot below:

    Hope this helps.

Do get back to us if you have any questions.

    Thank you!
