How can i set a default date to, say, 1st April 2010, but allowing the user to overwrite this if needed?

You can try do this something like this

Use the URL parameter value to pre-populate  the date/time field with April 1 2010 value.. the form user can then overwrite this if they want to.

Hope this help. Inform us if you need further assistance.
