Input of Dash ("-")

If a user inputs a dash or dashes in a required field, the error "Field Is Required" displays, even when the input is valid. Why is that and how do you allow input of both numbers and dashes without triggering the Required Field error?

Additionally, some fields have the ability to validate the data that is inputted and if this validation is on no other symbols or characters will be allowed other than those that fit the format.
