I find that the visual report builder is not intuitive and doesn't work well for my needs. Can anyone recommend a good solution to putting data into visual charts and graphs rather than a grid list?

Unfortunately to my knowledge we do not yet have any other methods of doing this unless you have the form send data into one of our integrations which supports graphs.
An example of this would be the use of the Google Spreadsheets Integration to gather the data. You would then need to configure it into a Data Source. After that is done then you would need to have the Data Source send this information and allow it to build a Google Chart or Visualization. However, this is something that would have to be configured outside of JotForm as it is beyond us even if you used a different Integration to create a chart and it may take some time to configure.
Another example of this that is a bit simpler would be to use Zapier's Service with JotForm (Your Form) as the Trigger which would then create an Action via Ducksboard or Geckoboard. These are two Data Sourcing Companies that are available when charts is searched in Zapier which allow full detailed graphing and visuals. However, do be advised that both these companies as well as others often have a monthly service fee for their use which is outside of JotForm.

Here's an example of this being available for use in Zapier -
