Fillable PDF: text overflows on the boxes

I'm trying to make a form that fills in an existing pdf with a postal code. However, the pdf is set up with spaced apart boxes for each letter/number of the postal code. The current version of the auto fill just writes the postal code left aligned, which just writes straight over the lines. Is there some way to either a) space out the letters in the result or b) have small individual boxes for each letter that appears in the form in a row for the applicant to fill out?
