Add embedded thumbnail image option to grid reports for images

Asked by markashton on July 18, 2013 at 03:45 PM

Grid Reports Fantastic - But Agonisingly Flawed - Please Read

    Hi

You know I've researched many different ways to present data from jotforms ... including google spreadsheets ... and I can safely say that the best reporting tool is Jotform's own Grid report ... but requires a couple of tweaks.

Its strength, and appeal with my clients, is the brilliant toolbar at the bottom that allows one to search submissions with keywords ... true power.

Not only that you can remove columns at will via the dropdown arrows at the top, and do all the usual 'sort by column' stuff.

Also nice is the fact that the header row always stays in focus ... freeze-framed in spreadsheet language ... great when there are a lot of submissions.

All this that the html report can't do !!

Unfortunately its world class status is compromised by the omission of a couple of factors ...

    No Thumbnail Option Available

For some inexplicable reason ... the brilliant magnifying tool has been added to ONLY the HTML report. So no thumbnails as per my post here: http://www.jotform.com/answers/243704-Request-Have-a-Hover-Thumbnail-on-Images-in-the-Grid-Listing-Report-like-on-HTML-Table-Report

Grid Reports Do Not Autofit To The Page

If you use the Grid Report a lot ... this starts to grate. It would be best if it could remember its previous position ... possible? Or at least get it to autofit the screen ... a reporting tool is not much good if you can't see stuff !! as per my post here: http://www.jotform.com/answers/243706-Why-Do-Grid-Reports-Not-Fit-The-Page-Whereas-Html-Tables-Do

Image Links Not As Good As Visual Thumbnails that hyperlink to Image In New Window

What does this guy mean? I hear you ask ...
Well, check this report - can you get an idea of the visual results: http://www.jotform.com/grid/31956430923052

No? How about this then? http://www.jotform.com/grid/32005888856060

Beautiful ... the image is visible ... hyperlinks to a new window ... you can see the wood for the trees ... your clients will love it ... Can it be done? NO

Through love nor money you will NOT get your Grid Report with uploaded images looking like that? How do I know ... I've been on it two days ... I've wracked my brain on this one

Getting techie now ... I tried to submit to a new form ... passing values through url ... into a hidden field whereby I could use a html expression with tag to display the image as a cropped filepicker image ...

If I could do that I could do all the above ... but so far I simply cannot identify the field value for the URL ... it is presented as an image link ... and so is surrounded by html crap ... SO IF ANYONE CAN TELL ME HOW TO IDENTIFY THE FIELD THAT DESCRIBES THE LINK in an upload image file .. I will kiss your ass for a week ;-)

Aytekin ... how about implementing this ... every single jotform user will benefit ... every client I have seen wants to see their pictures in the Grid Report ... I'll do unpaid testing for a week ... anything

I need this - this report is the one ...

    Can you help

    Thanks Mark

We appreciate your feedback, but we can not implement everything very fast, as there is a lot of work involved, especially it is hard on complex web apps.

    No Thumbnail Option Available

Ticket is already added to our system.

Grid Reports Do Not Autofit To The Page

The same is here, ticket is already added.

Image Links Not As Good As Visual Thumbnails that hyperlink to Image In New Window

Thank you for your examples. I am attaching a feature request ticket to this thread, so this will be reviewed and added to the system.

Developers have to prioritize their efforts to fix/implement the most important things first, so we do not have ETA for our feature/bug report tickets in most cases.

We will give it a try but I wouldn't want to give you too much hope. It is probably not possible on the grid.

Answered by markashton on July 19, 2013 at 07:44 AM

    Aytekin

Don't ... its not the best solution ... please consider this ....

I've been thinking about it in depth and even if you do implement the thumbnail hover ... the images will still be oriented incorrectly within the thumbnail ... due to EXIF data problem. So you would have to fix that too.

To demonstrate ... check this ... hover on the thumbnail and then click the link in this html report: http://demomr.myresearch.info/table/31954796208061

See? Thumbnail wrong. But Filepicker image correct ... but this where the magic lies ... read on ...

My clients say they would like to see the image in the report itself ... like this ...

    http://www.jotform.com/grid/31975976684072

    How did I do this?

I applied the following code to a Radio Button Option ... and then selected it on submission ...

    <a target="_blank" href="https://www.filepicker.io/api/file/NIAGduykSnKCfSXqQIO6/convert?h=700" rel="nofollow" ><img src="https://www.filepicker.io/api/file/NIAGduykSnKCfSXqQIO6/convert?h=100"></a>

AHHAA !! ... so the Grid Report can display images beautifully ... and hyperlink from the image beautifully ... and as we are using the filepicker image ... there appears to be no orientation problem. Also, the cropping method of filepicker is so drop dead simple as it is done via the URL ;-)
    No storage of images either.

So what work would have to be done to do this ...

Currently, an image submission delivers this code to a report:

    <a target="_blank" href="https://www.filepicker.io/api/file/NIAGduykSnKCfSXqQIO6/" title="Image.JPG" >Image.JPG</a> 730.74 KB>

What I'm saying is ... with the grid ... why not just amend this string to this - you can play around with the convert for the thumbnail size ... Job Done

    <a target="_blank" href="https://www.filepicker.io/api/file/NIAGduykSnKCfSXqQIO6/convert?h=700" rel="nofollow" ><img src="https://www.filepicker.io/api/file/NIAGduykSnKCfSXqQIO6/convert?h=100"></a>

    This solution provides the following:

    1) Skyrockets value of grid report to users by adding a brilliant and alternative image feature
    2) Removes any orientation problems
    3) Engineering time minimal.

Come on ... give it a try ... and I'll test ... I promise you this will be great

    Thanks Mark

    Thought ...

Why not keep everything the same but add the option in the Grid report to either choose an 'Image with a link' ... or an 'Image with an image".

    Like this ...

Then people have a choice ;-) I think the thumbnail should be 100px in height for both portrait and landscape photos ... and hyperlinked to new window

    Thanks Mark

Hi mark thanks for that. The options at the report wizard is good. Users may choose if link+preview thumbnail on hover or instantly display the real raw image and act as a hyperlink.

However, this may take some time and we can't assure that it is possible at the moment.
But we will try our best to come up with that result. And if not, then maybe we just need to stay on the link and hover feature.

    Thanks,

    Ken

However this may take some time ...

    Why?

For the time being ... all that needs to happen is to change the following code that gets delivered to the grid report, for image submissions from filepicker:

    .. a title="Image.JPG" target="_blank" href="https://www.filepicker.io/api/file/NIAGduykSnKCfSXqQIO6/" rel="nofollow" >Image.JPG 730.74 KB

    to this code:

    .. a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://www.filepicker.io/api/file/NIAGduykSnKCfSXqQIO6/convert?h=700" rel="nofollow" >img src="https://www.filepicker.io/api/file/NIAGduykSnKCfSXqQIO6/convert?h=100" alt="" />

We can't assure that it is possible at the moment.

    I've proved it here: http://www.jotform.com/grid/31975976684072

Also, it took me weeks to get this done but the image is happily working in this grid report for the signature field: http://www.jotform.com/grid/30523907678057

So, it is totally doable ... and we get rid of all the orientation problems etc ...

And if not, then maybe we just need to stay on the link and hover feature.

There is no hover feature with the grid report ... that's the whole point ... it is brilliant bar the fact that you can't see any images. The search submissions thing is brilliant.
Bottom line .. Link and hover ... doesn't work ... thumbnail doesn't always load ... loads the wrong orientation and by the time you've done it ... you might have well have clicked the link.
No ... we need this for images - a solution already nailed in jotform for signatures: http://www.jotform.com/grid/30523907678057
Only difference ... we hyperlink to the image to a new window.
What are we waiting for ... best thing ever ... I can't do my business otherwise ... I totally need it
I'll do whatever it takes. Thanks
    Mark ;-)

    Ken & Aytekin,

I know we've successfully implemented the hover on Grid reports which I am chuffed about ... but do you think this is actually a great addition to reports ... giving a choice to users.

In my heart of hearts ... I know my clients want to see the images at-a-glance ... and that means a thumbnail option visual with a hyperlink to a new window for the main image is perfect.

    Many thanks Mark

    Hello Mark,

As we spoke in your last thread, showing the image upon mouse hovering in the correct orientation on grid reports  it's been solved, according to this thread https://www.jotform.com/answers/243704

So now the image will show portrait orientation when its needed.

Would you think you are all set with this feature request and that should we cancel the request on this ticket?

or do you still request something like the iamge on the grid report?

so it will show the thumbnail itself just like in the Submission PDF version?

    Jeanette,

First off - the image orienatation problem has not been solved.

I have tested the claim that the orientation in reports has been fixed and can confirm this is not the case ...

This report http://www.jotform.com/grid/32034912049044 on my machine shows all thumbnails in incorrect orientation  see: http://screencast.com/t/nFk3lURHtyj

Now if the thumbnails are the correct way up on your machine then I wouldn't be surprised if you are using a mac and therefore the problem is EXIF related which I have reported on prior to this.

Extensive information was provided to you by me on this thread: http://www.jotform.com/answers/236830-Photo-File-Upload-Portrait-Landscape-Photos-Wrong-Orientation-On-Iphone

    Was this taken into account?

This is why the solution I propose in this thread is the way to go ... you remove any problem with rotation ... everyone can see everything at-a-glance ... and would take minimal engineering as advised above in this thread.

How do I know .... check this: http://www.jotform.com/grid/32005888856060

Can you see what I mean?

    Hello Mark

No,  I am not in MAC machine, I used Linux/Ubuntu, but still I can see on your report the problem. Probably you are still right and the EXIF data is not being correctly taken when the upload comes from a camera, I did a test in a diferent way. So, I can get your point

I'll contact Kenneth as I see he released that commit so he can explain better and advise how this will be handled

    Hi,

I have cracked the image orientation solution as per this post: http://www.jotform.com/answers/243900-HTML-Grid-Reports-Thumbnail-Pop-up-Needs-To-Be-Correct-Orientation

If you look at this report in every browser, on PC & Macs it is perfect:
    http://www.jotform.com/grid/32005888856060

    To achieve this:

Take the code jotform uses for the current link:

    <a target="_blank" href="https://www.filepicker.io/api/file/NIAGduykSnKCfSXqQIO6" rel="nofollow">Image.JPG 730.74 KB</a>

    and change to this code:

    <a target="_blank" href="https://www.filepicker.io/api/file/NIAGduykSnKCfSXqQIO6/convert?h=700" rel="nofollow"><img src="https://www.filepicker.io/api/file/NIAGduykSnKCfSXqQIO6/convert?h=100" alt="" /></a>

So what exactly are we changing ... just the bit between the <a> tags ...

Now I've cracked the rotation problems ... Can we implement this please?

    Thanks Mark

    @Aytekin,

I have tried to get an alternative working with a Google spreadsheet integration:

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AogxdfOvltKQdEJEcFJFclFoOVZGQmcxS05LU1RzNHc#gid=0

Can't be done as you cannot apply formulas to an entire column without your new submission thinking the row is filled. So the new submission ... new row thing doesn't work .... with a formula thrown into the mix ....

Look, I know I'm a pest .... but I'm a bit screwed without this integration.

Can you advise me on your thoughts on this matter ... I will test and advise ..

    Any chance ??

    Hi,

I know I'm a pain in the ass .... but if there's one thing out of all the things I've requested that I would love to have implemented it is adding an embedded thumbnail option to a grid report ...

On Google Spreadsheets this is such a ballache to implement:
    http://www.workflows.co.uk/wf-content/forms/demomr-diary-spreadsheet.htm

Unfortunately it is not searchable in the same way that the brilliant grid report is.

I believe this to be a worthy job that will provide great ROI ... it can be done ... please consider ...

    1) We are already bringing in images for signatures into Grid report so we know that can be done
    2) After extensive testing I would have to say that photo thumbnail popups don't really work. I find I'm waiting for the thumbnail to load and might as well have clicked the link ... I would consider doing away with the thumbnail pop-up alltogether and replacing with this ... or providing the option of either.
    3) I'm sure the engineering time on this will be very small as advised above.

Could this be implemented please. I will leave you alone then ;-)

    Thanks Mark

Hey Mark, thank you for the added input and it's quite alright. No you're not any of that and it's purely understandable that you seek to get these things added to make things better. This is something that we're very well aware that these features and improvements are important to not only you but others as well which is why we've been doing our best to work close with you on several occasions. On top of that, looking in at your side of things this is something that you don't have to do and yet you take the time to fully test the limits of several things providing feedback which is very important to us. It may take a little longer but our Developers will definitely respond to you about these things here as soon as they are able to do so or if we find out something sooner then we'll let you know.

Hey, mark I have an update for your most requested feature. We prioritize this for you. So please stop making threads anymore.

There is a new option on the report and it was called "Display Photo Instead of a Link". You just need to check that in order to display your images directly to the report instead of a link.
P.S: The option was visible to the "new" myforms page.

Once set, the table and grid report should be look like this.

If you have any problems, let us know. Please do confirm as well if this works from your end.

    This is great.

I note that all thumbnails on the grid report have scrollbars because the image thumbnail is 120px in height whereas the space available is around 110px.

Could the height space of the grid be increased to remove the scrollbars and show the thumbnail and data i.e. link and photo size

    Update:
I added a new "Report Configuration" for GRID reports only!
The name is "Grid Cell maximum Height", so basically this will set the "maximum height"(max-height) of the cell element not the "height" itself. Those two are different :) Usefull if you want to extend the cell height of the grid report. Look at the image below on how to

The default max-height value is 100px, you can change that of course. You can either put a value with or without the px suffix. Both works fine :). Once save it should properly render the cell height of the report on load.

Please confirm if it works from your end. To get the latest updates, recreate your reports or just submit a new submission to recreate a fresh report :)

    Thanks,
    Kenneth
