how can I copy an item (question and its answer) from one page of the form to a subsequent page?

You can duplicate fields on the form as explained here:https://www.jotform.com/help/242-How-to-Manage-Multiple-Fields 

Please note that on a blank form, there won't be any answers. So only the questions can be duplicated. When you fill the form, then the answers can be entered.

Are you perhaps referring to the copying fields on the PDF submission document? If yes, please note that the PDF document shows the fields that are present on the form.
