The other problem I have with the current form is that when one has completed a calculation and then goes back, one cannot 'deselect' the buttons to go back, so the user ends up in a mess.

    Hello there,

    Thank you for reaching out.

Fields doesn't automatically set to empty when hidden conditionally. Although, it doesn't work with Button Radios widget, you can set a field's value using Conditional Logic(How to Insert Text or Calculation into a Field Using Conditional Logic).

If you need to ask your form fillers one question at a time, you might want to consider using a Card Layout form(How to Create a JotForm Card).

The Card Layout form features Navigation and Progress Bar that your form fillers can use to navigate back and forth through your form.

Your existing form https://www.jotform.com/202254886744362, may encounter some styling issues when converted from Classic to Card layout though, because of the Button Radios widget's width and the limited width of the Card Layout. So you might need to build a new one.

Hope that helps. Let us know if you have any questions or if you need further assistance.
