    When our customers submit rental applications, their social security

    When our customers submit rental applications, their social security number sometimes is short a number or has an extra number. This happens by customer error.

    People are used to giving a social security # as:  Ex.  065-78-9456    In this box, they usually enter this as:

    ex. 065789456     If they accidently are over or short a #, they don't notice.

    Can this field be set to be able to enter 3 numbers - have a dash - enter 2 numbers - have a dash -  and enter four final numbers?

    You cannot set the format like what you described. The best alternative for you is to add a hint example to serve as a sample format that your users can follow.Here's an example:
