Feature Request For Power Tools - Transloadit

Asked by markashton on September 16, 2013 at 04:11 PM

    Hi,

For direct uploads this is the bomb: https://transloadit.com/

Ok, so filepicker provides a lot of methods for uploading images i.e. via other services ... facebook, etc.

But this is the one I want.

Can I suggest this tool is included please ... and is there a way to do this via the API ??

    Thanks Mark

Thanks ... would you be kind enough to pass onto Aytekin please ...

It specifically handles video upload and transcoding which filepicker does not ... filepicker is great ... don't get me wrong ... but its focus is on uploading from cloud locations where people store photos.

Transloadit seems to focus more on generic uploading and so from a smartphone perspective it has particular appeal.

    Many thanks

    Regards Mark

    Mark,

That sounds very interesting. Do you need the integration to convert the video files? If so, should be integrated like the filepicker.io (integration on the form) or like dropbox (integration after the form is submitted)?

Answered by markashton on September 17, 2013 at 10:11 AM

    Hi Aytekin,

Yes .. I need the integration to convert the video files ... an alternative to filepicker.io which doesn't do this.

Don't get me wrong ... filepicker is excellent ... and handles photo uploads beautifully ... fast with correct orientation. The integration is working extremely well ... and I'm very grateful for it. I have just done a project for a major client ... 250 submissions with photo uploads from smartphones via jotform and filepicker ... great success ... especially as client can see photos in the now-optimised grid report and search on them.

However, a number of clients are asking for video uploads ... market researchers ... tells them a lot you see. So, I have tried video uploads with filepicker ... but it doesn't seem to cut it. The Iphone kinda works for small vids ... but with Android phones ... the video files are just to big ... and if a video is successful it can still be incorrectly orientated ... and is fussy about which browser to play in ... no good ... the workflow is just not there.

So, I started looking around ... filepicker does something with zencoder but I think that is done post upload ... problem is with size etc ... needs to be slicker.

So, I found Transloadit ... its pretty techy so a small feasibility study on your behalf might be an idea ... even if it is just looking at website ... seems to be simple API stuff

Bottom line ... it seems straight forward .. deals with upload on the right side of the fence and encodes video ...

Can it be done ... you can run all the testing by me .. shall do in real-time

Note: jotform users using filepicker will like this ... transloadit uses Amazon S3 etc.. so that will already be set-up for their existing operation.

What do you reckon .. can you authorise this?

Benefit: Jotform handles video uploads directly from device

    Let me know

    Thanks mark

    Hi,

I have enquired with Transloadit regarding their service and its applicability to Jotform .... here is the co-founder's answer:

    ---------------------------------------------------

    Hey Mark,

ah alright, that makes sense. Well if it's all web-based, then integration is even easier.

    1) You basically just include our jQuery plugin, define what to do with the files and it works out of the box. Check this demo for example and navigate through the code tabs on the left hand side: https://transloadit.com/demos/image-resize/resize-to-75x75 It's really not more code than this for the basic functionality.

    2) Filepicker.io is in a different market than us. They just concentrate on importing files from all kinds of sources into the platform, and then allow the user to change the imported image on the fly and then save it.

Our focus is on the file conversions. We offer plenty, for all kinds of files. We offer less features for the end user to import the file (but we do offer uploading!), but we offer many more and better file conversion. And we can handle any file, whereas filepicker only handles images.

For your use case - users building their own forms - integration of Transloadit could be very powerful, because you could allow your users to specify what will happen with their files. Like for example if images are uploaded, create 3 different sizes and add a watermark to the last one. If a video is uploaded, encode them into 5 different formats and sizes and extract thumbnails of the original video, then create an animated gif out of these thumbnails. If PDF files are uploaded, extract each page as an image, then store all the images in a specific Amazon S3 bucket.

If there was an easy interface for users to specify what to do with the files then this would be very powerful! The possibilities are nearly endless. With Filepicker, you only ever process images.

We are working on a partnership with them, though, so that we can offer our customers both Transloadit's conversion horse power, and Filepicker's nice file import tools.

Please let me know if this answers your question.

If you can explain your use case a bit more, I can also explain more advantages.

    ----------------------------------------------------

    Thanks ... Hope this helps

    Regards Mark

    Hi,

I am having problems with Filepicker.io with the upload function on smartphones. It basically fails 50% of the time.

A large part of filepicker is getting photos from different sources ... facebook, flickr ... and importing them into jotform. It is good in certain scenarios and does manage to orientate photos properly on smartphones via EXIF data.

It is worth noting, however, that filepicker only works on Iphone & Android smartphones and only from iOS 6 upwards and Android 4 upwards

Now when using these phones, when one presses the jotform filepicker function on a smartphone it goes to an intermediate webpage screen like this to provide options:

Unfortunately this screen often fails on smartphones. Why?

Regarding iOS - the problem is that iOS will occasionally kill the parent window when filepicker opens, meaning that there is no way of passing an upload back to the Jotform website. This happens intermittently and is not very predictable.

Visually the jotform end-user gets this:

With Android and some manufactureres like Sony ...

    What goes on is this:

    - the filepicker tells Android "I want a photo"

    - Android says "Ok sounds good, let me present a list of options so that the user can upload a photo" - and then promptly proceeds to offer nothing to allow the user to upload a photo.

This is an OS level issue, and not something that can be circumvented unfortunately.

    Transloadit Solution
Ok Transloadit offers an upload function whereby pressing the upload button goes straight to the camera roll and NOT to an intermittant webpage that can be killed.
So, this problem is by-passed ... try this ... on an Iphone
See how the upload goes straight to the camera roll whereby the user can just select their photo? Simple!
The majority of jotform use is going to be uploading photos either directly, or by taking them in-the-moment ... not by dicking around going to facebook and selecting it there.
I'm not saying replace Filepicker.io ... but I am urging you to provide your customers like me a better upload option for photos.
I need this ... can it be considered please?
Kenneth would do a great job on it ... with me testing it.
    What says you
    Thanks Mark

I believe Aytekin has alreadly considered this implementation as he asked to you a couple of questions :

That sounds very interesting. Do you need the integration to convert the video files? If so, should be integrated like the filepicker.io (integration on the form) or like dropbox (integration after the form is submitted)?

From your answers above, I think you need the integration this way:

-To be able to convert videos and pictures right out of the camera of an smartphone

-To be integrated in the form, just like Filepicker.io

Am I correct on this? I just need a yes or no from you, so I'll add this to the ticket and send a note to Aytekin right away.

Answered by markashton on October 17, 2013 at 03:23 PM

Yeah ... Aytekin said that ... asked me a couple of questions ... and then did his massive silence thing when I answered.

With regard to your points ....

It would be preferable if the conversion could be done at the smartphone level ... but I guess the upload has to take place first because the processing power just isn't there yet on a smartphone ... and the work has to be done server side on transloadit servers.

The transloadit service would have to be integrated into the Jotform builder ... it is clearly differentiated and the use case is massive ... all that video conversion etc. It looks like a case of adding the Jquery plugin ... works out the box.

Now I know you've all gone mad on doing apps ... and I'd love to find one that I find really useful ... but I go on what I need to get clients' money to pass in my direction ... and what they want is the ability to upload photos and videos from smartphones that actually works consistently ... along with written answers in the moment.

Now my question is this ... is there a way to do this without Jotform being the rate determing step? ... because you lot are a law unto yourself ...

Is it possible I could integrate this via your API ... I'd be grateful to know

    Thanks Mark

    Thanks Aytekin,

Speaking to the co-founder he said you can contact him anytime ...

    Name: Tim Koschützki
    Skype: transloadit_tim

On a skype call just finished with him I clarified ...

    1) All processing work is done server-side ... like filepicker. Has to be really though as browser-based.

    2) It will handle EXIF data and therefore orientation will be fine for photos

    3) There are access to loads of templates that users can utilise for different use-cases ... this would be something within the configuration like with the filepicker config ...

    Why bother?

    - the upload process will be simpler .. pressing the button will go straight to the camera roll. We won't have intermediate web-pages killing the upload.
    - videos will be handled and encoded ... they are all the wrong orientation and don't playback properly from filepicker. This will be a great addition.
    - will be able to upload and convert any files e.g. video that can be converted into 3 formats with thumbnails .. pdfs that can have each page generated as an image ...

Tis good stuff. Look forward to it

    Regards Mark

The Transloadit addition to Jotform will be a great addition ... an aletrnative to filepicker that has its place already.

Filepicker deals with just photo uplaod and from Cloud sources.

However, Transloadit has a different use case ... deals with upload directly ... also encompassing video ... and also doing tonnes of great conversion for photo and video after upload ...

Can I ask if this is getting close please?

    Thanks Mark
