Word count limit not working in Firefox & Chrome (ok in IE)

Asked by bpoquette on October 10, 2013 at 05:29 PM

I have a form that includes a field with a 125 word count limit.   It seems to work fine in IE and in REALLY old versions of Foxfire, but only accepts less than 100 words in Foxfire 23 & 24 or Chrome Version 30.0.1599.69.    Here's a link to the form:  http://www.uumilwaukee.org/form/are-producer-form.  To get to the problem field, one has to answer "yes" to the field/question "Would you like to provide details for publicity now?"  Then look for the problem word-count field "Description of the class and the teacher's biography Less than 125 words, please. "

Here's sample text that "fits" in the form field when using IE, but doesn't work in the other browsers.

This class provides a safe space in which adults can discuss loss, understand how we respond during times of loss and why. Participants will reflect on their personal attitudes toward loss and how UU theology can comfort us as we grieve. The class will help us begin to clarify our own religious beliefs about loss, growth and life after death. We will end by commemorating loved ones in a “Candles of Memory” celebration. This is not purely an intellectual discussion of loss, nor is it a bereavement support group. People preferring an opportunity to process a specific loss at great depth are advised to seek a bereavement support group. Facilitators are members of our Pastoral Care Associates team.

    Hello,

I have checked your form from your website/page and it is not consistently working on my end as I can see there are javascripts on your website/page conflicting the form.

I would suggest to re-embed your form using iframe embed code. This should help fixed this issue. Getting the Form iFrame Code

If problem persists, please let us know so that we could further investigate.

    Thank you for using JotForm.

As you suggested, we re-embedded the form using the iframe embed code. The word count field still does not work properly in the most current version of Chrome or Firebox (though it works fine in IE). The user is cut off around 83 words though the word limit for the field is 125 words. Please look into it further. Thanks.

    Hello,

I have replicated this on Firefox 25 and Chrome Version 30.0.1599.101 m using only the standalone version of the form

However, I could not replicate this on any other forms including a newly created test form on my Firefox 25

I have tried to clone your form but same issue on the glitch and did not fix it.

I will try to recreate the form and see if it fixes it. I will get back to you as soon as I have updates to it.

    Thank you

    Hello,

I have now finished recreating your form and it seems the text area word limit is now working fine

Here is the form I recreated.

    http://jotformpro.com/form/33156605315954

You may clone this form. Please refer to this user guide on How to Clone Form From a Webpage

I have copied every settings and labels etc. except I modified your condition a little bit.

Here is what I modified on your condition rule:

As you can see from the image above Condition 6 is conflicting with Condition 4. In JotForm when you show a field, it will automatically hide it until the condition is true. So no need to hide it further on Condition 6. I deleted condition 6 because of this.

If you need further help, please do not hesitate to ask. Thank you

Sorry, but we still need help with the word count field. The word count limits on the new form you created really aren’t working in Chrome or Firefox. The field that should accept 125 words cuts off at 94 words in those browsers. Thanks for fixing the condition problem. We did clone and embed your form on our web site http://www.uumilwaukee.org/form/are-producer-form

    @bpoquette

I am using chrome and can't seem to reproduce the problem.

Are you copy pasting text to the textarea? I think the copied text might bypassed the limits so it cuts off? I am typing every text, and it works just fine.

If the issue persists, try this widget: http://widgets.jotform.com/widget/character_counter. Thanks!

Neither typing the words nor pasting text works for us. We’ll look at the widget. Thanks.

    Hi Bonnie,

After testing and reviewing your form I think what really is causing the issue here is the maximum allowed characters set for this field (Max Length). My observation is if you just type a single letter example "a" that will be counted as 1 word and will also be counted as 1 character and if you typed in a long word example "Pseudopseudohypoparathyroidism" this will be counted still as 1 word but 26 characters since you have set the the Max Length to 555 it only limits 555 characters within the field itself that is why you can no longer type in. Please look at my sample:

I typed in the word Pseudopseudohypoparathyroidism and it only consumes 18 words but I can no longer type.

After changing the max length to unlimited I can now exceed the numbers of the word limitation.

My suggestion is to set the max length value to unlimited and set your word count limitation since the user cannot submit the form once it reaches its limits "125 words in your case".

Please confirm is this theory works on your end so that I can confirm that my observation was correct. Kindly let us know if you have other questions.

    Thanks,

By the way you can confirm it by setting the max length to 1 and try to type something in the field it will just allow you to type in 1 character.

Thank you!  The max length property on the field was definitely the problem.   Now the form works fine in all three browsers.

I suggest a word count add-on that might help your writing if you use Chrome

    https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/word-count-tool/ibjgdahgcdkpdlbkadidojhfddflblcm

    if you use Firefox:

    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/word-count-tool

if you want a fast & reliable solution, you can go to its web version:
