    Phone Number Validation

Asked by bernie20 on May 31, 2011 at 02:07 PM

Hello, I would like to validate the phone number, but there is no validation option provided when I use the Phone Number from the Quick Tools section.  How can I get this done?

I know it can be done manually, but I really like the phone format in the Quick Tools section.  Can I recreate this format manually if needed?

    Thank you

    Hi Bernadette,

If you use the Phone Number field, it will automatically enforce validation by default. Hence, there is no need for a separate verification option to check if the text entered by your guests are numeric.

Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns. Thank you for using JotForm!

I used the default phone number field and was able to enter letters and successfully submit my form without it being flagged. Can you please reconfirm that the default phone number validation is numerical only.

I don't want to make the field required but at the same time I want to make sure a user enters numbers only if they do enter anything in that field.

See Screen-cap below of form and submission email received.

You are right. There is no validation on the phone field. It can only check if the user has entered something when you enable the required option.

This field type, without at least insisting on numeric entry is useless. Might as well remove it.

Yeah I was wondering the same thing. Can you add validation to the Phone Number Fields so that it can accept numbers and also typical phone number special characters such as dashes and parenthesis?

As a work around, from previously answered questions on thi sforum is to substitute the Phone Number field with a Text Box and turn on the number validation option, you can also set the max size.

For the area code validation the following thread from neilvicente explains how this can be achieved with the use of javascript:

    http://www.jotform.net/answers/39248-How-can-I-make-it-so-that-when-a-field-asking-for-a-phone-number-automatically-moves-onto-the-next-field-after-typing-the-area-code#2

It seems that developers are working on adding validation for the Phone Number field as I saw this question was asked previously. http://www.jotform.com/answers/32598-I-need-phone-number-validation
