Force AutoComplete to Fill Field if user gives a partial input

Is there a way to force the AutoComplete widget to fill the field from the items list? By that I mean when using the widget, the person can start typing a few letters and if they hit tab or click their mouse on the screen, the field will not complete the entry. Can the widget be modified so when the user hits tab or clicks elsewere that the field completes by itself? Maybe with either the first item that matches the letters already typed or, if there are no matches, default to the first item on the list?

There isn't currently a way to force the field to fill, the user can select the option with the mouse or use the arrow keys and hit enter. I will forward this as a feature request but can't give any guarantee or ETA of if or when it will happen.
