I was able to reproduce this issue. Unfortunately, the widget seems to be glitched at this time as it would not follow the desired height dimesion value. It actually just uses the uploaded image height dimension
I will submit a ticket to our higher team support regarding this issue. Hopefully it can be attended soon.
We will notify you via this threads for any updates when available.

Is this a similar problem to what I have, when a pdf file is uploaded it only shows to a height of maybe one centimeter (often nothing is visible), but when you upload again it shows the full first page of the file.
This is a very useful widget when it is working properly, so I hope it will be fixed soon.
In the future, will there be added functionality such as showing thumbnails of uploaded pdf file pages?

The reason could be is that it only recognize the image format since the widget was mainly designed for "Image Upload Preview". I don't think that there is a field that will preview PDF file when uploaded I'm not sure if this widget will help you http://widgets.jotform.com/widget/pdf_embedder.
About your idea you can submit a new ticket requesting for that feature then we will forward that to our dev team and add that in their feature list. You can use this link when posting a new ticket http://www.jotform.com/contact

The image upload preview widget has been updated - allowing you to re-size the preview window width using the form builder:
The height is adjusted automatically in proportion to the width setting - this is because not all images have the same ratio of width:height.
Please try it out, and share your experience with us.
