I've seen references to a prepopulate app. clicking on the link takes me straight to the app. I'd like to find some details of what it does before I let it loose on my form.

Hi, the Field Prepopulator app will do the following on your form:
- Read your user details
- Read your form details
- Read your submissions (all details)
You will be able to select a form, in which you would like send information prefilled to a client, then fill in the fields. You click on Generate URL, it will genarate a URL with the filled values that you can use to share with your client.

Am I right in my understanding that this just prepopulates one copy of a form for completion by one client. It does not provide a method of prepopulating a form every time it is opened by any client.

That is correct, this will only generate a URL, which will only contain the data you already prefilled, to send just to one client. So, every time you want to send prefilled data in your form to another client, you will need to generate another URL.
If you do not want to send prefilled data, just share the same direct link of your form.
