Hi again,
I'm afraid this didn't turn out as I had hoped. (Unfortunately, CSS :before doesn't work with dropdown options.) The best solution I could find that wouldn't require getting a copy of the form's full source and embedding it in a website along with a script was this one which seems to work only in Firefox.
So, it appears your only recourse would be to use a script similar to the jQuery Image Dropdown solution to which you referred.
