My next billing occurs on 7/27. I'd like to cancel a day or two before that, as my need for payments will cease about that time.
If I press cancel under my account settings, does that happen immediately, or can it be set to a future date?

When you cancel the subscription your account will be downgraded
once the paid period expires which is on July 27th, 2011.
The cancellation does not happens immediately there is no option to set
the termination to a future date.
