Bug Report - Date Field Does Not Sort By Date In Grid Reports

Asked by markashton on September 25, 2014 at 04:59 AM

Note: This is not about the submission date which only shows in US Format

A client requires a Date Of Event field.

Just to capture the day ... e.g. 02-10-2014 ... simple really

They require to sort this field in date order in reports.

The date field does not do this ... it sorts by its first number ... which is useless.

My client requires the report to sort by date .... it would appear I can't provide this simple asking because your date field is not seen as a date.

    Can you advise please?

    Many Thanks

    Hey Mark,

May I ask which report type you are trying to achieve this with?

I'm guessing you are referring to excel reports, in which case we would have to investigate further and find a solution.

In the meantime you can re-format relevant fields column/row in excel as date formatting which should allow proper sorting.

Alternatively, I'm not sure if it's suitable but, did you try using the calendar report option? I realize it's a bit limited but just wanted to throw it out here.

    Hi,

I'm referring to Jotform Grid Reports.

This is what I provide clients with. It is the best report format ... one can filter, sort ... it's in real-time, etc

Nothing to do with excel ... that's a third party s/w application that Jotform has no control over.

I'm talking about how your grid reports interpret your date field ... they are interpreted as numbers ... not dates.

They need to work like the submission date i.e. recognised as a date.

    Hi Mark,

I have tried sorting it using the grid report, but it seems to be working properly for me. I also took a look at your own report to see how it works and it seems to be sorting the data properly as well.

When I clicked to sort it by the Date of Event it sorted it by the date entered, followed by the submission time if multiple submissions matched the date.

Do correct me if I misunderstood.

    Best Regards,
    Ben

    Hi Ben,

That is kind of you. But if you put an entry in for 02-10-2014 which is in October you will see that it doesn't sort properly.

Yes it sorts perfectly if everything is in the same month - try your own with a couple of different months dates for the next month ... goes wrong then

    Thanks Mark

    Hi Mark,

Yes, you are completely right about this.

I will notify our developers about this.

In the same time, I have found a way that you can use to make sure that the date is shown properly - at least until the fix is made and that is changing the format from DD/MM/YYYY to YYYY/MM/DD.

Our developers will get back to you through this thread as soon as the fix is made or there are any updates in regards to this issue.

    Best Regards,
    Ben

Oh dear... that means never then ...

English school teachers are using this ... I can't provide a US date format ... they'll just tell me to change it.

So ... your submission dates can't be changed to UK format as per this thread .... http://www.jotform.com/answers/277776-Submission-Dates-Format-In-Reports-In-US-format-All-My-Clients-Want-UK-Format

The workaround of adding the date field is totally flawed because you can't do a simple thing like sort by date.

How can it be OK for US format ... but not work at all for another ... it doesn't make sense.

Could you enquire whether this is a quick fix please.

    Thanks Mark

    Hi Mark,

I presume that the option for UK date will be added to the grid reports as well as it was added for Excel reports. Thing is these are not the same types of reports so a feature available in one might not be available in another.

Now I know what you mean by the dates and actually the US date is MM/DD/YYYY which I personally find a bit confusing as I prefer Y/M/D, but in either it comes down to:

Y/M/D - it will sort itself properly every time, but

M/D/Y and D/M/Y need to be fixed so that these fields can be sorted by.

Could you enquire whether this is a quick fix please.

Unfortunately I can not tell you much at this time except that the developers have been notified about this. We might know more in a little while, but they will reply back here once they have any updates.

    Best Regards,
    Ben

    Hi Ben,

What's with all the excel? ... I never mentioned excel. I'm not interested in excel. It has no value to my client - they work on Macs and don't have excel anyway.

It would be easy to do it in excel by just formatting the column to a date format. Job done.

The point is ... I need an online real-time tool that is web-based - the grid report is perfect.

Client wants to be able to sort on a UK date ... you feel a bit of a twat when you say it can't be done.

They just look at you blankly.

So, if it is just a case of a quick fix ... I'd be tremendously grateful.

It is a bug after all ... is it not .... on one of your main functions.

Sorry for the confusion. The link that you have mentioned above, stating that there is said how you can set the reports in UK time format was referring to Excel reports. In them, that is possible, but not in the grid reports.

Yes, I know exactly what you mean by that. I will be adding more details to the ticket made for our developers and hopefully they will get back to you soon with the update.

Again, sorry for any confusion above, as mentioned I was referring to the other thread that you gave link for, but I have mentioned that it is a grid report in the thread to our developers.

Per my reply to the related ticket #277776, I will first focus on the root of the problem:

    Hello Mark,

I have just started integrated user-specific time formats on your request.  It took some time to re-focus due to my other active projects. Please accept my apologies.

I will update here when users are able to select their own format to decide their time representations. Thank you very much for your input.

    Kind regards

Thanks for sorting the time formats for jotform.

This issue is with your date/time field. It does not sort by date ... but by the first number in the date.

    Look at this ....

    Hi Mark,

Yes, the issue seems to still be present and I see that the bug is still not closed so the issue on time formats on the other threads was something they probably needed to take care of first, then to take care of this as well.

alp_deniz will update you as soon as there is progress on this issue as well.

    Hi,

While the iron is hot ... and on the back of the excellent addition to the submission date format ... I was just wondering whether this 'sort' problem ... on a key quick tool i.e. Date/Time ... could be implemented.

Users use this tool but are unaware that in reports they will not be able to sort on it in a meaningful way.

What use is the field if you cannot sort it logically by date in reports?

    Many Thanks

    Mark

    Hi Jan,

    Looking for a solution?

There is no technical conundrum with this!

This is simply a case of the data not being read as a date ... but read as a number.

Surely this is just a format change on the field ... from that of a number to that of a date.

Like the format of the submission date field.

    Thanks

    Mark

    Hey guys,

I'm really cap-in-hand on this one ... I really need the date to be sorted as a date ... not as a number.

    Just a fundamental really ...

From an analysis point of view .... what value does this date have ... if it is not seen as a date.

    None whatsoever!

No one searches for dates .... they use dates for sorting logically ... and time frames ... not possible with jotform!

It's crazy .... it is a key field that is fundamentally broken ... in a way that it can provide no value ... but will lead your clients up the garden path .... with the belief that it will work.

My client wants to sort by date ... any chance we can fix this please ... tis a bug

I know I'm a pain in the arse ... but I've got clients who need to sort by date in grid reports ... and this date field doesn't do that ... it sorts by the first number ... which is clearly a coding oversight rather than a bug.

You got me going with your post on the 8th October saying you were going to do it soon.

I'd pay for this fix ;-)

    Hi Ben,

Yes, you are right about it not sorting by date in the HTML Listing report, but this is thread about date sorting in Grid Report. I have created a Grid Report for you to take a look (right under the HTML table report) and that one is working properly.

Now to have this feature in the HTML listing report as well I have created a new thread for you here: http://www.jotform.com/answers/453263 where we will open a thread for our developers to add this same functionality from Grid Report to HTML Table Listing report as well.

I seem to have a problem with sorting a table in a grid report (dates)

    http://www.jotform.com/?formID=51789073726971

Could you please take a look and tell me what's wrong? I realize that I've mucked up some of the dates in the date dropdown by adding trailing text, but if that's the reason for the problem, I still don't understand what it is actually sorting on.

    Thanks,
    David
